Khun Ying Sudarat Keyuraphan is a Thai politician, former deputy leader of the Thai Rak Thai Party, and President of Thai Peung Thai Foundation. She was the former Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Former Minister of Public Health[3], Former Deputy Minister of Interior, Former Deputy Minister of Transport, and mulit-times elected Member of Parliament.[4]

Sudarat was born in Bangkok to Mr. Sompon Keyurapan and Mrs. Renu Keyuraphan. Her father was the former Member of Parliament from Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Sudarat graduated her high-school from St. Joseph Convent School in Bangkok and earned Bachelor Degree from Chulalongkorn University in Commerce and Accountancy and Master Degree from Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration of Chulalongkorn University. Sudarat is currently studying her Doctoral Degree at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in Buddhist Studies.

Sudarat is married to Mr. Somyos Leelapunyalert, who is a real estate entrepreneur. They have 3 children which are Phumphat, Peeraphat, and Yossuda.

Political Work

Sudarat began her political career in 1991, when she was only 30 years old. She has been elected as the Member of Parliament representing district 12 in Bangkok, which held 33% of Bangkok Populations. In 1992 Election, Sudarat has been re-elected as the Member of Parliament in Bangkok and has been appointed as Deputy Government Spokesmen in Chuan Leekpai’s Government.

In 1994, Sudarat has been appointed as the Secretary-General of Palang Dharma Party and was the first woman to become Secretary-General of Thailand’s political party at that time. She also has been appointed as Deputy Minister of Transport in Chuan Leekpai’s Government.

On 1995 Election, Sudarat was re-elected as Member of Parliament from Bangkok and has been appointed as The Deputy Minister of Interior in Banharn Silpa-archa’s Government. She was the first woman to become Deputy Minister of Interior of Thailand.

In 1996, Sudarat was once again been elected as the Member of Parliament and was the only member to be elected from Palang Dharma Party.

Two years later, in 1998, Sudarat has co-founded Thai Rak Thai Party together with Thaksin Shinawatra and 21 other founding members, including Somkid Jatusripitak, Thanong Bidaya, Purachai Piumsombun, Thammarak Isaragura na Ayuthaya, and Prommin Lertsuridej. Sudarat has been appointed as the Deputy Leader of Thai Rak Thai Party, where later the party has successfully won over 61% in 2006 elections and was the largest party in Thailand.

In 2001 Election, Sudarat has been elected as The Member of Parliament and been appointed as Minister of Public Health in February 17, 2001 under Thaksin Shinawatra’s Government. After serving 4 years in Ministry of Public Health, she was appointed as Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives in second term of Thaksin Shinawatra’s government in year 2005 until September 2006 coup.
