Steven J Fowler

SJ Fowler or Steven J. Fowler is a contemporary English poet, writer and avant-garde artist. He has produced diverse body of work across poetry, performance art, experimental theatre, asemic writing, calligrams, concrete poetry and sound poetry, as well as sonic art, installation, fiction and visual art.

Works

He has received commissions from Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the British Council, Kettle's Yard, Wellcome Collection, Austrian Cultural Forum, Penned in the Margins, the London Sinfonietta and The Liverpool Biennial. Since 2011 he has been associate artist at Rich Mix Arts Centre, London.

He has been translated into over a dozen languages, known for his internationally facing collaborations and projects, having performed at festivals and venues across the world including Dhaka Lit Fest, The Cervantino festival, Hay Xalapa, Hay Arequipa, Time Litfest Mumbai, Airwaves Reykjavik, Reverse Festival Copenhagen, the Niniti International festival Iraq, the International Novi Sad Literature Festival, the Berlin Poesiefest, as well as in venues in the UK including Wigmore Hall, the Hay-on-Wye Festival, Stanza Festival, Ledbury Festival, St.Georges Hall, Morden Tower and The Sage.

He has been exhibited in galleries across Europe, with his solo exhibition Mahu running for two months in the Hardy Tree Gallery, in Kings Cross, London, in summer 2015.

He has lectured at Kingston University, Tate Modern, Southbank Centre, the Poetry School, Birkbeck College, St. Martin's College, the British Library.

Collaborations

Fowler has collaborated with poets including Aase Berg, Jerome Rothenberg, Joe Dunthorne, Sam Riviere, Harry Man, Eirikur Orn Norddahl, Morten Søndergaard, Zoë Skoulding, JR Carpenter, Luke Kennard, Marcus Slease[1], sound artists including Phil Minton, Maja Jantar, Sharon Gal, visual artists including Rebecca Kamen, and filmmakers Noah Hutton, Lotje Sodderland amongst others.

Enemies project

Began in 2013, the Enemies project curates original collaborative works, performances and exhibitions between poets, artist, photographers, sculptures and other creative practitioners. Attempting to innovative the possibilities of collaboration and the written word, it has involved over 700 practitioners in nearly 20 countries and received awards from Arts Council England, Jerwood Charitable Foundation, the British Council, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Wales, Conaculta and others.

The Maintenant series

In 2010, he began the Maintenant interview series for 3:AM Magazine, which has 99 issues. Aiming to introduce 21st century European poets to English language audiences, the series balanced avant garde and literary poets. It has featured the likes of Ann Cotten, Immanuel Mifsud, Yurii Andrukhovych, Aleš Šteger, Tadeusz Dąbrowski, Georgi Gospodinov, Gerður Kristný, Tadeusz Różewicz, George Szirtes and Luljeta Lleshanaku. He has also interviewed contemporary philosophers including A. C. Grayling and Simon Critchley. In 2011, he was appointed UK editor of Lyrikline and poetry editor for 3:AM Magazine. In 2017 he was appointed executive editor of Versopolis : European Review of Poetry, Books and Culture, alongside Clemens Berger.

Life

Fowler was born in Truro, Cornwall, studied at the University of Durham and the University of London, Birkbeck College. He lives in London.
