Stephanie Kurlow

Stephanie Kurlow is an Australian dancer and ballet student often credited as being the world's first Hijabi Ballerina.

Kurlow was born to an Australian father and Russian mother.[1] She grew up in the suburbs of Sydney and began dancing at the age of two. She performed with Riverside Theatre, but stopped after she and her family converted to Islam in 2010.[2][1][3][4] She wore her first hijab when she was nine years old. As a child, she was dismissed from ballet classes for wearing a hijab, as ballet schools would not allow the garment while a dancer was training in class.[5][6] Kurlow launched an online campaign to raise money for private classical ballet tutoring so that she could train while wearing the hijab, raising over $7000.[7][1] Her mother later opened a performing arts school, Nasheed & Arts Academy, catering to Muslim children, which Kurlow attends.[8][3] Kurlow lists African-American ballet dancer Misty Copeland, Chinese-Australian ballet dancer Li Cunxin, and Emirati lifter Amna Al Haddad as her inspirations.[9] She plans to open her own dance school in the future geared toward diverse youths of various backgrounds.[10] Kurlow is an ambassador for Remove Hate From The Debate, a campaign that assists youth in identifying online hate speech and tackling it.[11] She is a recipient of the Aim for the Stars scholarship and the Game Changer Scholarship by Björn Borg.[11][12][13][14]
