Stephanie M. Garcia Richard from Los Alamos, New Mexico[1] is an American politician and a Democratic member of the New Mexico House of Representatives representing District 43 since January 15, 2013.[2] She currently chairs the House Education Committee and serves on the Labor and Economic Development committee.[3] She is not running for re-election in the state house and her term will end January 15, 2019. She entered the race for Commissioner of Public Lands in the 2018 Democratic primary after Ray Powell dropped out.[4] She would be the first woman to hold the position.[5]

Education

Born in Tucumcari, New Mexico and raised in Silver City,[6] Garcia Richard earned her BA in political science from Barnard College of Columbia University and her teaching certificate from University of California, Los Angeles.

Elections

  • 2018 Garcia Richard won the three-way 2018 Democratic pre-primary convention with 43.71% of the vote.[7]
  • 2016 Garcia Richard was challenged by Sharon Stover, who ran unopposed in the Republican Primary, and won the Nov 8th, 2016 election with 8,452 votes (58.85%).[8]
  • 2014 Garcia Richard was challenged by Republican Geoff Rodgers, the winner of the Republican primary, and won the November 4th, 2014 election with 5,955 votes (56.8%).[9]
  • 2012 To challenge District 43 appointed Republican Representative James W. Hall, Garcia Richard was unopposed for the June 5, 2012 Democratic Primary, winning with 1,983 votes[10] and won the November 6, 2012 General election with 7,119 votes (51.2%) against Representative Hall.[11]
  • 2010 To challenge District 43 incumbent Republican Representative Jeannette Wallace, Garcia Richard, as Stephanie M. Richard, ran in the June 1, 2010 Democratic Primary, winning with 1,299 votes (59.6%)[12] but lost the November 2, 2010 General election to Representative Wallace,[13] who served in the House from 1991 until her death in 2011.
