Monica Christina Youngblood is a politician and a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, representing District 68[2] since January 15, 2013. Youngblood supports bringing back the death penalty and also supports mandatory breath tests on drunk driving (DUI) suspects, although she herself declined a breath test during a DUI stop. [3]

Elections

  • 2012 When District 68 incumbent Democratic Representative Thomas Garcia ran for New Mexico Senate and left the seat open, Youngblood ran in the four-way June 5, 2012 Republican primary and won with 763 votes (44.7%)[4] and won the November 6, 2012 general election with 6,908 votes (55%) against Democratic nominee Eloise Gift.[5]

Drunk driving arrest

Youngblood was arrested on May 20, 2018 for driving while intoxicated. Police say Youngblood then did poorly on a field sobriety test and refused to take a breathalyzer test.[6]

Youngblood made several statements regarding her position as a legislator to the arresting officers. She was recorded on tape saying, "So many people tell me that you guys treat people of color like shit and I always stood up for you."[7] According to the New Mexico Governmental Conduct Act, it is a criminal offense for public officials to use their offices to obtain personal benefits.[8]

She was sentenced on October 2 to one day in jail, mandatory use of an ignition interlock for one year, attendence at DWI school, completion of 24 hours of community service and payment of court costs and fees. [9]

She has been a vocal supporter of harsher DUI penalties.[10] She introduced legislation to bring Lyft and Uber to New Mexico, due to the drunk driving problem in the state.[11]
