Star Trek: Short Treks

In June 2018, after becoming sole showrunner of Discovery, Kurtzman signed a five-year overall deal with CBS Television Studios to expand the Star Trek franchise beyond Discovery to several new series, miniseries, and animated series.[6] A month later, he announced a spin-off miniseries of shorts titled Star Trek: Short Treks to be released between the first two seasons of Discovery to explore characters from the main series further. Releasing monthly from October through to the January 2019 premiere of the second season of Discovery, the shorts are between 10 and 15 minutes long each and according to Kurtzman they "deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what's to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes. They'll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek." The four shorts include: one directed by Rainn Wilson, who also reprises his role from Discovery as Harry Mudd; a short starring Aldis Hodge as Craft, the only human on board a deserted ship; an exploration of principal character Saru's (Doug Jones) backstory as the Kelpien to join Starfleet; and an adventure with principal character Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) with appearances by her mother (Mimi Kuzyk) and a Xahean played by Yadira Guevara-Prip.[7][8][9][10] The four episodes are made available in the United States of America on CBS All Access[11] and broadcast in English in Canada on Space on the release date before being streamed on CraveTV the following day.[12]
