Kirsten Beyer is an American science fiction writer, best known for her novels based on the Star Trek: Voyager television series. She is a staff writer for Star Trek: Discovery, and functions as the coordinator for Discovery tie-in media, such as comic books and novels, on behalf of CBS.[1]

She has also written for the Buffyverse.

Career

Little is known of Beyer's career prior to her involvement with Star Trek: Voyager.

After corresponding with Voyager show runner Jeri Taylor expressing an interest in writing for television, Beyer was invited to pitch for the series.[2]. She pitched stories from Voyager seasons five (1998) until seven (2000), but none were produced.

Beyer was encouraged to send a query package to Pocket Books by her writing partner, Heather Jarman. The query was accepted, and development of a new Voyager tie-in novel began. However, the editor leading the development moved on to other projects, and the unnamed novel was never realized.[2] Beyer was later introduced to Marco Palmieri, editor of the Star Trek line at Pocket Books, while attending the Shore Leave science fiction convention with Jarman.[3] Palmieri agreed to accept samples of her work, and invited Beyer to write for him a few days later.[2]

Beyer's first published novel with Palmieri was Fusion (November 2005), the second book in the Voyager: String Theory miniseries. A subplot of the novel, involving the Vulcan character Tuvok, was originally a Voyager episode pitch titled "Siren's Song".[2] Another unproduced pitch became the short story "Isabo's Shirt", anthologized in Distant Shores (November 2005). Beyer becoming the lead writer of the Voyager novel series, replacing Christie Golden, with the release of Full Circle in March 2009.[4] She has completed nine novels in the series since 2009, with a tenth planned.[5][6]

In May 2016, Beyer was hired as a staff writer for Star Trek: Discovery.[7] She believes she was recruited because of her familiarity with Star Trek canon, and because of her experience as a tie-in fiction writer.[8] She has contributed to the Discovery comics line published by IDW from its first issue.[9]

Beyer was revealed as a writer of an upcoming Star Trek series, detailing the later years of the character Jean-Luc Picard, via a Twitter post by actor Patrick Stewart.[10]

Beyer regularly attends science fiction conventions such as Star Trek Las Vegas, Shore Leave, and Dragon Con. She frequently appears as a guest on Star Trek-focused podcasts to promote her book releases, and to discuss Discovery production news.
