St Xavier's College, Ranchi, is an autonomous college affiliated to the Ranchi University located in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It was founded in 1944 by the patna Province of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order that traces its origin to St. Ignatius Loyola in 1540.
History
St. Xavier's College, a Minority Educational Institution, was first affiliated to Patna University, then from 1950-1960 was under Bihar University. Affiliation was switched to Ranchi University when this institution opened in 1960. The University Grants Commission conferred autonomous status in 2005 and granted "College with Potential for Excellence" status in 2006. Grade A accreditation with a rating of 3.20 out of 4.00 was granted by NAAC in 2013.[2]. The Intermediate section of the college is affiliated to the Jharkhand Academic Council, State board of Jharkhand.
Vision
Xavier has among its objectives to develop Christian leadership of high calibre and integrity, to engage in research and extension activities related to the development of Jharkhand, to promote vocational and entrepreneurial education, to accord priority to the education of Catholic as well as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students, and to function as a critique and conscience for society. Furthermore, Xavier aims for its students to contribute to sustainable socio-economic development and to set themselves free from socio-economic, religious, caste and gender prejudices and act as catalysts of social change.[3] The expressed values of Xavier are consonant with the Jesuit tradition.[4]

Facilities
St. Xavier's College study room and library was established in 1944. It was called Meletre Baraque and was situated in front of the Principal's office. In 1960 it was shifted to the Arts Block; in 1996 the stack room was enlarged. It currently contains about 100,000 books and journals.
Sports facilities are available in the college for volleyball, basketball, hockey, cricket, football, badminton, and indoor games.[12]
College campus has a fitness Gymkhana, several common rooms, 4 canteens & cafeterias. College also provides hostel for boys belonging to minority or lower socio-economic culture. A church is also present in the college campus.
Sister institution
St. Xavier's College, Simdega is a sister institution established by Jesuits of Ranchi province.
