St. Aloysius PU College, Harihar, was established by St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, on its 125th anniversary. The new college began on the church premises of Our Lady of Health and in May 2009 shifted to its new campus in Amaravathi Village, Harihar. In June 2010 St. Aloysius Degree College was started. In June 2011 the Degree College was bifurcated from Pre-University College. The Society of Jesus is responsible for these colleges.[2]

History

St. Aloysius Pre-University College is a sister concern of Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society and its St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, which traces its origins to 1880. From June 2005 until April 2009 St. Aloysius PU College, Harihar, was functioning in the space provided by the management of Maria Nivas School, Harihar. From May 2009, the College has been functioning at its premises at Amaravathi.[3]

College crest

On the right half of the shield-shaped crest is a soaring eagle, reminding one to aim high in intellectual, physical, and spiritual development. In the lower half is an upright lion, symbolic of the virtues of vigour and boldness. In the left half of the crest is the shining sun over a centre of learning, which students should emulate by illuminating and contributing to human growth. The letters IHS at the centre of the rising sun are the first three letters of "Jesus" in Greek.[4]

Courses

Teaching is in English. Courses are offered in three streams, Arts, Science, and Commerce.[5]

CET classes, special English classes for the weak, counselling service, career guidance, and personality development programs are offered for the students.[6] Hostels are run for boys and for girls.[7]

The college offers a summer camp experience aimed at helping the youth of the area to better their English.[8]

In only its second year of existence, 87 of 96 outgoing St. Aloysius students passed the pre-university course exam for admission to university studies.[9]

Activities

A choir of 127 boys and girls sings for college events.

The College is fond of sponsoring competitions. The Department of Psychology conducted an inter-collegiate psychology quiz competition, "The Psyche", with five other colleges participating. The Business faculty conducted "Spin Out", a two-day, state-level management fest. A Vermiculture Meet was co-sponsored with St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, with the theme "God is not up there but is among us” as you can see in the creatures that surround us! This was in support of new and more sustainable methods of farming and human living.[7]
