Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre is an Ayurvedic eye hospital and research facility based in Koothattukulam, Kochi, Kerala in India. It specializes in treating eye diseases and ailments through Ayurveda. The 350-bed hospital is situated in a 55-acre (22 ha) campus. Late Dr N P P Namboothiri is the director and chief physician of Sreedhareeyam.[1].

History

The hospital was created through the efforts of the Nelliakattu Mana, a traditional household of Vaidhyas (physicians). The ancestors of Nelliakattu Mana inherited knowledge and skills in the branch of Ayurveda called "Shalakya Tantra" which was handed down through generations. Shalakya Tantra is the branch of ayurveda which deals with ailments to the organs above the neck in human body. The ancients of the mana is believed to have bestowed with the knowledge of ayurveda by Maharshi Parashurama which was handed down through centuries. The Ayurvedic physicians of the Nelliakattu Mana in the later generations became professionally qualified doctors with academic achievements which was further enhanced by extensive clinical experience and research. They brought in the goodness of scientific advancements in diagnostic technology to the traditional body of knowledge in Ayurveda to create indigenous treatments and remedies. It no longer relies on the brilliance of doctors to diagnose the ailment, instead it uses all possible diagnostic technologies which the science has put forward and then brings in the remedial measures from the treasured knowledge of Ayurveda.

The 350-bed hospital employs 55 doctors and 200 paramedical staff. Sreedhareeyam attracts patients from India and abroad. Sreedhareeyam is now the world’s biggest Ayurvedic Eye care Hospital. It has an in-house research center, manufacturing units of state-of-the-art machinery and precision technology, most advanced optometry lab, R&D divisions with most modern quality control equipments like HPTLC & AAS, and a world class eyedrop manufacturing facility. [2] The hospital complex spans around fifty five acres. It has nine independent hospitals and 16 consulting centres all across India.

Notable achievements

It is the first ophthalmolgy specialty Ayurveda hospital which has undergone NABH (National Accreditation board for hospitals) accreditation till date which is the most stringent quality measure available in India. It is the biggest hospital in the Ayurveda segment to get this accreditation. It is the only accredited Ayurveda hospital in India which is declared as a Center of Excellence by the Ayush department of Government of India. It has received numerous awards & accreditations like Green Leaf certification, Guru Vidyapeeth and many more.

The manufacturing division of Sreedhareeyam achieved the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), GMP certification and ISO 22000 recognition in the Ayurveda segment. Sreedhareeyam received the recognition through the food safety audit conducted by the prominent certification agency ‘Bureau Veritas’.

Accommodation facilities ranging from Suit rooms to dormitories, Ayurvedic village containing 20 independent villas of international standards, most hygienic modern kitchen, vegetarian food court, Internet cafe, Money Transfer /Exchange, Meditation /Clinical Yoga /Eye exercise, Library, etc. are some of the facilities of the institution. The hospital provides vegetarian food cooked according to Ayurveda principles at their own kitchens.

The main hospital is in the village of Koothattukulam in Kochi, Kerala. Sreedhareeyam has established specialty eye hospitals in PPP with the Government of Chhattisgarh in Raipur and in with collaboration with National Institute of Ayurveda in Jaipur. It is recognized and funded by the Department of Ayush, Government of India as a Centre of Excellence in Ayurveda Ophthalmology. Associate branches and OP clinics are established in New Delhi, Jaipur, Raipur, Bilaspur, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Madurai, Erode, Coimbatore, Kannur, Kozhikode, Perinthalmanna, Manjeri, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thodupuzha, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram.
