Squad is a tactical first-person shooter video game "set in the current modern day environment"[4] being developed by Canadian studio Offworld Industries. It is set to be self-published through Steam and is a spiritual successor to the multi-award-winning Project Reality modification for Battlefield 2. The game incentivizes teamwork and cooperation to complete objectives. The game features several playable factions including various insurgent forces and national armies. Squad became available on Steam Early Access on December 15, 2015.

Gameplay

The goal of Squad is to create a "tactical first person shooter built around teamwork, strategies and cooperation".[5] Squad is primarily focused on communication and teamwork between teammates which is key to success because when "the game refuses to give out extra information, teammates are the only way to find the enemy and know where to go".[6] Squad matches occur in large-scale open maps spanning multiple kilometers with 40 vs 40 player teams fighting to complete various objectives such as; capturing objectives, destroying weapon caches, and depleting enemy reinforcements. A squad consists of nine players working together to complete various objectives. Each squad member chooses a role when selecting their squad, such as squad leader, medic, rifleman, automatic rifleman, or heavy anti-tank.

Development

Announcement

Development of Squad was announced in October 2014 when Project Reality developer Sniperdog (known as Merlin on the Squad forums) made a post on the Project Reality forums.[7] The announcement carried the news that the team of fifteen was making a spiritual successor to Project Reality on Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4.

Greenlight

On April 5, 2015, Squad appeared in Steam's Greenlight service and it was announced in an update called "Vote For Us".[8] Within 24 hours Squad had been 'Rated up' 9,200 times.[9]

After eight days on Greenlight, Squad was officially greenlit by Steam on April 13, 2015.[10]

Kickstarter

The kickstarter started on May 26, 2015, and ended on June 27, 2015, with CA$434,805 pledged.[11] There were six backer levels to choose from, excluding the Rifleman and Squad Leader tiers which were available to purchase after the Kickstarter but ended a month before Squad hit Early Access on Steam.
