Spencer George Matthews (born 6 August 1988)[2][Autobiography 1] is a British socialite, reality television personality and author.[3][4] He is best known for appearing on the British TV shows Made in Chelsea, I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, The Bachelor, The Jump and Five Star Hotel.[Autobiography 1]

Early life

He is the third son of landowner and entrepreneur David Matthews from his second marriage to Rhodesian-born Jane Spencer Parker, an artist.[Autobiography 1] His mother was educated at the Slade School of Art.[Autobiography 1] He is named after his maternal grandfather, Robert Spencer Parker, an architect.[Autobiography 1] He has an older half-sister, Nina,[Autobiography 1] and two older brothers James and Michael, the latter of whom died at age 22 scaling Mount Everest in 1999.[Autobiography 1]

The family owned Caunton Manor, a 30-acre estate in Nottinghamshire, and Eden Rock in Saint Barthélemy, one of the top 100 resorts in the world. Matthews split his childhood between the two residences.[Autobiography 1][5]

He was educated at Eton College.[Autobiography 1] In 1999, when Matthews was ten years old, his brother Michael was killed in a mountaineering accident on Everest, hours after becoming the youngest Briton to conquer the peak.[Autobiography 1]

He attended the University of Southern California where he studied Cinema and Television with the aim of becoming an artist, but dropped out after nine months.[6][Autobiography 1]

In 2007, upon purchasing a 10,000-acre estate with hunting lodge in Scotland, his parents acquired the Scottish courtesy titles of Laird and Lady Glen Affric.[7][8]

Career

Matthews worked as a public relations manager and an actor and as a foreign exchange trader at Icap currency brokers.[9]

He came into the public eye through the E4 constructed reality show Made in Chelsea. His storylines have tended to focus around his love life, with the first series beginning with his friendship with Caggie Dunlop supposedly leading to something more. He has gone on to date several cast members, earning him a reputation as a Lothario. Matthews reportedly has left the show after media coverage of a supposed steroid drug problem.[10]

In 2012, Matthews was the principal participant in The Bachelor UK series 5.[11] In 2015, he participated in the fifteenth series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!,[12] but withdrew after two days.

In 2013, Matthews wrote his autobiography, Confessions of a Chelsea Boy.[Autobiography 1]

On 12 March 2017, Matthews won the fourth series of the Channel 4 reality series The Jump.[13]

Personal life

Matthews is married to Irish model Vogue Williams. They announced their engagement on 1 February 2018 and married at his family's Glen Affric Estate in June 2018.[14][5] The couple had a son, Theodore Frederick Michael Matthews, on 5 September 2018 at 3:55am; he was born in a London hospital.[15][16][17]
