"Someone to Watch Over Me" is a song composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin from the musical Oh, Kay! (1926), where it was introduced by Gertrude Lawrence. Gershwin originally approached the song as an uptempo jazz tune, but his brother Ira suggested that it might work much better as a ballad, and George ultimately agreed. It has been performed by many artists since its debut and is a jazz standard as well as a key work in the Great American Songbook. It is also referenced in the Frank McGuinness play Someone Who'll Watch Over Me.
Popular recordings in 1927 were by Gertrude Lawrence, George Gershwin (a piano solo) and by George Olsen & His Orchestra (vocals by Fran Frey, Bob Borger and Bob Rice).[1]

- Susan Boyle – Someone to Watch Over Me. The album was on the Billboard 200 for 14 weeks and peaked at No. 4 on November 11, 2014.[2]
- Ella Fitzgerald – Ella Sings Gershwin (1950) and Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book (1959). Her 1950 rendition of the tune with the added backing of the London Symphony Orchestra peaked on the Billboard Classical Albums charts at No. 6 on October 21, 2017.[3]
