Skjalm Hvide

Jørlunde Church (Jørlunde Kirke) was first founded by Skjalm Hvide

Skjalm Hvide (died after 1102) was one of the most influential and powerful chiefs in Denmark in the early medieval age. [1]

Skjalm Hvide has been regarded as a founder of the Hvide clan. With his wife wife Signe, he was the father of Asser Rig (died ca. 1148) who was the father of Absalon (c. 1128–1201), Archbishop of the Diocese of Lund. [2] [3]

Skjalm Hvide held large land possessions around Sorø on the island of Zealand. One of his most important strongholds was located at Jørlunde in North Zealand. He built the Jørlunde Church (Jørlunde Kirke) around the year 1085. The original appearance of the church was first changed by a conversion around 1350. [4] [5] [6]
