Simge Sağın (born 8 August 1981) is a Turkish singer, songwriter and composer.[1] From early 2010s, she started to make Turkish pop songs, and with the release of her single "Miş Miş" in 2015 she became one of the well-known artists in Turkey.

Life and career

Simge Sağın was born on 8 August 1981 in Şişli, Istanbul.[1] She is of Albanian descent.[2] Her father is also a musician from Amasya. She has a younger sibling. At the age of 12 she started playing guitar and composing. She continued her studies on music as a graduate of ITU Turkish Music State Conservatory.[1] She studied Turkish classical music and got a chance to work with many musicians like Alaaddin Yavaşça and Sadahaddin İçli in the university.[3][4][5]

She earned her first professional experience in Zeynep Dizdar's orchestra. Later, she accompanied as a vocalist to many musicians like Gülşen, Yaşar, and Serdar Ortaç.[6] She then started to perform on her own at a few places.[7] She made a duet with Kıraç for the TV series Annem, which started in 2007. The song "Annem (Mommy)" was among the 20 most listened to songs in the digital media in 2010.[8] She also contributed to the work of many screen credits and TV series music such as Son Bahar (2008).[5] While working for Serdar Ortaç, Simge met Erdem Kınay who said that he would help her produce her own album.[9]

In March 2011, Simge released her first EP album called Yeni Çıktı (Newly Minted). "Ödeme Vakti" was selected as the lead single of the album. In 2014, she produced her second EP album called Bip Bip (Beep Beep).[10]

In 2015, she released, "Miş Miş", a cover version of the song "Dans Mon Quartier" in Turkish with Ozan Bayraş serving as the producer.[11] The song became a hit and ranked number one on Türkçe Top 20.[12] Its music video reached over 150 million views on YouTube.[13] On 29 January 2016, she released her second single "Yankı". The lyrics and music of the song was prepared by Sezen Aksu, Deniz Erten, Ersay Üner and Simge. The song reached up to number 2 in the Official Lists.[14]

In January 2016, she made a guest appearance on the movie Her Şey Aşktan and performed the song "Ne Kavgam Bitti Ne Sevdam". On 22 July 2016, she released, "Kamera", a cover version of the Bollywood song "Badtameez Dil".[15] Its music video was directed by Bedran Güzel. Alper Narman, Onurr Özdemir and Sezen Aksu wrote the Turkish lyrics for the song.[16] On 11 January 2017, she released, "Prens & Prenses".[17]

Artistry

Simge's voice is soprano.[18] In an interview in 2011, she discussed her musical style, saying that she tried to use "a little bit of Turkish music mixed with modern elements in her songs. So the songs are both Western and Eastern." She named Sezen Aksu as her inspiration.[6] Mayk Şişman of Milliyet also commented on the artists musical style, saying: "The likes of Simge who prefer Western style but also use Eastern elements in their music automatically loved and embraced and manage to catch everyone's attention".[19]
