Shirley J. McKague (born June 12, 1935) was a Republican Idaho State Senator, representing the 20th District from 2007 to 2012. She previously served as an Idaho State Representative for Districts 14B and 20B from 1997 until her appointment to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Gerry Sweet.

Early life and career

McKague was born in Nampa, Idaho in 1935 and raised in Meridian. She graduated Nampa High School[1] in 1953.[2] McKague and her husband Paul have six children.

Before entering politics, McKague was a:[2]

Elections

McKague was first elected in District 14B in 1996 with 13,717 votes (67.3%) against Democrat Glida Bothwell.[3]

  • 1998 Re-elected with 14,564 votes (80.6%) against Glida Bothwell (Natural Law) and Platt Thompson (Reform).[4]
  • 2000 Re-elected with 17,987 votes (61.1%) against Jim Corey (D).[5]

Redistricted to 20B in 2002 and re-elected with 7,712 votes (64.0%) against Richard Harlan (D) and David Lieberman (Libertarian).[6]

  • 2004 Re-elected with 12,316 votes (65.6%) against Kenton S. Travis (D)[7]
  • 2006 Re-elected with 8,975 votes (65.59%) against Chuck Oxley (D) and Kevin Charles Jaeger (L).[8]

McKague was appointed to the vacant Senate seat for District 20 caused by the resignation of Senator Gerry Sweet, took office early in 2007.

  • 2008 Elected with 14,153 votes (68.7%) against Laurynda "Ryndy" Williams (D).[9]
  • 2010 Re-elected unopposed with 11,731 votes.[10]

Retirement

In February 2012, McKague announced her retirement and endorsed fellow Republican Senator Chuck Winder;[11][12] redistricting had placed them both in the newly redrawn Senate District 20. McKague worked until the end of the legislative session in December 2012.
