The Sheldon M. Chumir Centre is a health centre located in Calgary, Alberta. The facility is administered by the Calgary Zone of Alberta Health Services. The centre provides 24/7 Urgent Care services but is not a full-service hospital and does not admit any patients for overnight stays.

Location

The centre is on the site of the former Colonel Belcher Veterans hospital, across from Central Memorial Park.

Name

The facility is named for Sheldon Chumir, a long-time Liberal Party Member of the Legislative Assembly for Alberta who represented constituents in Calgary in the provincial government.

Facility

The Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre opened early Spring 2008. The 1st and 3rd floors include urgent care, diagnostic imaging, Calgary Laboratory Services, the Southern Alberta HIV Clinic (SAC), Sexual and Reproductive Health, STD Clinic, and all associated areas such as health records, support services, and admitting, and has been operational since April 1, 2008.

Services

The Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre has opened Alberta's first Safe Consumption Site on November 6, 2017. The Canadian federal government has dedicated 2.2 million dollars towards creating similar sites across Canada. The Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre also hosts a variety of 12 step meetings including, Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA). These CMA meetings are held Tuesdays and Friday 8:00pm in room # 3003 on the third floor. CMA is a California-based non-profit, public-benefit corporation working as a twelve-step program of recovered and recovering crystal meth addicts. Participants in local groups meet in order to help others recover from methamphetamine addiction although the meetings are open to anyone with any addiction including Fentanyl. CMA advocates complete abstinence from methamphetamine, alcohol, inhalants, and all other psychoactive drugs not taken as prescribed.

Parking

The Sheldon M. Chumir Centre has one parking lot with payment options including passes: visitor/patient monthly ($85), daily ($26) or half-hour ($2.00 per half hour or portion)with some discounts for seniors, etc., with authorization forms. Some parking lots/stalls are designated for people with disabilities only.[1]
