Sette e mezzo

Sette e mezzo (Italian for "seven and a half") is an Italian comparing card game similar to blackjack. In Spanish it is known as Siete y Media.[1][2][3][4] It is traditionally played in Italy during Christmas holidays. The game is also known in English as Seven and a half.[5]

Rules

Sette e mezzo is played with a 40-card deck, a standard deck with eights, nines, and tens removed. The value of cards two through seven is their pip value (2 through 7). Face cards are worth half a point each, and Aces are worth one. The objective of the game is to beat the dealer in one of the following ways:

  • Get 712 points on the player's first two cards, without a dealer two-card 712;
  • Reach a final score higher than the dealer without exceeding 712; or
  • Let the dealer draw additional cards until their hand exceeds 712.

The score of each player is calculated by adding the points of his cards.

Players may stand or take any number of cards as long as they do not bust. Wins pay even money. A tie results in a push. Typically, if the player achieves a total of 712, he turns up his cards, and provided the dealer did not also achieve a two-card total of 712, the bet would be paid at 2 to 1. If both the player and the dealer made 712, the hand is a push. A two-card 712, would beat a 712 of more than two cards.[6]

Variants

An Italian variant includes the rule that if the 712 is made with only two cards, the player who receives double their wager and becomes the dealer. If two or more players make 712 at the same time with only two cards, they will be paid double their wager and player closest to the dealer's right becomes the new dealer.

In another variant, the king of diamonds is wild and may take any value at the discretion of the owning player.
