The Satgas Pomad Para (Indonesian: "Satuan Tugas Polisi Militer Angkatan Darat Para", English: "Para Military Police Task Force") was the presidential bodyguard unit established by former Indonesian President Suharto. This task force replacing Tjakrabirawa Regiment after failed 1965 coup. This task force was liquidated in 1976 and replaced by Paswalpres.[2]
Brief history
After failed 1965 coup, Tjakrabirawa Regiment disbanded. In accordance of Minister/Chief of Army (Menteri/Panglima Angakatan Darat) Decree No. PRIN.75/III/1966 dated at March 23, 1966, Director of Army Military Police, Brigadier General (TNI) Sudirgo appointed to take responsibility for head of state protection and escort from Tjakrabirawa Regiment, transferring the power to Army Military Police. Soon after the transfer, Director of Army Military Police issued Decree No. Kep-011/AIII/1966 dated at March 25, 1966 which instituted Satuan Tugas Polisi Militer Angkatan Darat (Satgas POMAD) and appointed Lieutenant Colonel (CPM) Norman Sasono as its commander.
The Satgas Pomad Para task force operated under Director of Army Military Police. It consisted with Batalyon Pomad Para (English: Pomad Para Battalion) as the core, supported by Denkav Serbu, Denzipur and Korps Musik from Kodam V/Jakarta Raya, Indonesian Air Force's Batalyon II PGT (Pasukan Gerak Tjepat) (English: Rapid Action Force), Indonesian Police's Mobile Brigade (BRIMOB), and 531st Infantry Battalion/Para Raiders which later replaced with 519th Infantry Battalion/Para Raiders, from Kodam VIII/Brawijaya.
1st Pomad Para Battalion located at Jalan Tanah Abang II Jakarta Pusat, which was used for Tjakrabirawa Regiment's headquarter and barrack. The 1st Battalion assigned for protecting and escorting President and Vice President and their family, and high-ranked foreign head of state-level state guests, and guarding Merdeka Utara Palace, Merdeka Selatan Palace, and President and Vice President official residences.
2nd Pomad Para Battalion located at Ciluer, Bogor which was ex-barrack of 1st Pomad Para Battalion. The 2nd Pomad Para Battalion assigned for guarding Bogor Palace, Cipanas Palace, and assisting 1st Pomad Para Battalion' tasks. Eventually, Kodam V Jaya's Assault Cavalry Battalion assigned to Satgas Pomad, while 531st Infantry Battalion later reassigned back to Kodam VIII/Brawijaya. In accordance with the development of the Indonesian Army, the 2nd Pomad Para Battalion was finally liquidated. Later, at June 10, 1967, Minister/Chief of Army at that time, General (TNI) Suharto issued Decree No. KEP-681/VI/1967, which releasing Director of Military Police from the assignment and transferred the controlling and managing power to the Minister/Chief of Army.[3]
The task force later liquidated at January 13, 1976 by Ministry of Defence and Security/Chief of Armed Forces by Decree No. Sprin/54/I/1976, replaced by Paswalpres.
