Sankarapuram

Sankarapuram is a Town Panchayat of Villupuram district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Its old name was Azhagapuram. sankarapuram is the 6th largest city in villupuram District and most developing town near Kallakurichi. It is the Head of Sankarapuram taluk.

Demographics

The Sankarapuram is a divided into 15 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Sankarapuram Town Panchayat has a population of 15,664 of which 7,818 are males while 7,846 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.

The town is well connected by roads, with frequent buses to Kallakurichi, Viluppuram, Chennai, Bangalore, Thirupathi, Cuddalore, Thirukovilur, Chengam, Thiruvannamalai, Vellore, Hosur, Trichy, Perambalur ,salem and other surrounding towns.

Sankarapuram is on state highways:

  • SH-68 (Sankarapuram–Cuddalore Rd)

Train: Sankarapuram is not connected by railway.

The nearest railway station is Chinnasalem. The Chinnasalem town's railway station serves trains on the route to Mettur, Cuddalore, Nagore, Pondicherry, Salem, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai.

Tourism

Sankarapuram is nearer to Kalrayan Hills. Proximity of clouds fall near the peak of Vellimalai hilltop is a popular tourist spot for locals during the monsoon season. Vellimalai is a pristine unexplored location. The hills range in height from 2700 feet to 3000 feet and extend over an area of 1,095 square kilometres (423 sq mi).
