Samyang ramen

Samyang ramen (Instant Noodles) is instant ramen made by Samyang Foods, a Korean grocery company. The total length of the ramen is 50 meters.[1]

History

It was launched as the first ramen in Korea on September 15, 1963[2], replacing rice for the purpose of overcoming food shortage in Korea, which was torn by the Korean War. This product started to be produced by two machines when Jung-Yun Jun, the founder of Samyang Foods, brought the machines from "Myo-Jo-Shokuhin (Japanese: Meiji Foods)".

The chicken soup and the orange cover of the product were first shown at a price of 10 won per 100g. After trial and error for three years, it was loved as a representative of Korea's ramen, However, it was hit hard by the "industrial oil case" in 1989.

Events

Industrial oil case

On November 3, 1989, the prosecution received an anonymous letter saying, “There is use of industrial oil in ramen,” and the prosecution arrested five companies’ representatives, including the representative of Samyang Foods, according to the “Act on Special Measures for the Control of Health Offenses” and “Food Sanitation Act”. The press confused the public by using the term ' industrial tallow '.

On November 6, 1989, the Ministry of Health, Social Affairs, and Health ruled that ramen is harmless to humans. On November 28, all the representatives were released. However, the company has lost its trust. Also, as the result of stopping the production, employees lost their jobs.

A ramen which tasted like the first taste of chicken soup was released with the title ' The Classic' in September 2009. However, it was later discontinued.

On March 23, 2010, Jun Joong-yoon, founder of the company, resigned as honorary chairman, and Jeon In-jang took office.

Samyang ramen purchase movement

In June 2008, foreign substances were discovered in ramen products produced by Samyang Foods and Nongshim. On June 13, a metal nut was found in a "Large Cup of Delicious Ramen" and a cockroach was found on June 17 in Nong Shim’s ramen.

The 16th article of Chosun Ilbo criticized the detection of foreign objects in Samyang Ramen. However, it did not report the detection of cockroaches in Nongshim’s ramen. It made netizens strongly criticize Chosun Ilbo.[3] As a result, the netizens complained, "Let 's eat Samyang ramen noodles," and the "Samyang ramen purchasing campaign" has spread among netizens.
