The S R Nathan School of Human Development (NSHD) is an autonomous undergraduate and graduate school of the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).[1]

History

S R Nathan

The S R Nathan School of Human Development (NSHD), is an autonomous undergraduate and graduate school of the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). It was previously known as the School of Human Development and Social Services and was formally renamed on 22 February 2018 to pay tribute to the sixth former President and statesman, Mr S R Nathan. The renaming event was graced by her excellency Singapore's then President Halimah Yacob.[2][3]

The School was renamed in recognition of Mr S R Nathan's legacy in champanioing for community and social causes when he was in public service and the national labour movement. During his presidency, Mr S R Nathan was a Patron of SUSS from 2006 to 2011 and a strong advocate of the University's lifelong learning focus.[4]

In 2016, Mr Ong Ye Kung then Acting Minister For Education (Higher Education And Skills) and Senior Minister of State For Defence recounted in the convocation speech that the late Mr SR Nathan, who did not obtain a degree but was awarded three honorary PhDs due to his deeds, told Mr Ong Ye Kung that SUSS is a University for someone like himself.[5]

Industry Partner

In 2018, SUSS will recognize work experiences for a number of pre-school teachers from NTUC First Campus during school admissions. The university will offer 20 credit units exemptions or equivalent to 4 courses. This allows students to gradate 6 months earlier.[6]

Graduate Employment

In 2018, according to guidelines laid out by the National Council of Social Service (NCSS), new graduates with a Bachelor degree in social work from SUSS will fetch $3,400 a month in the social service sector.[7]
