SS Bates Victory

SS Bates Victory was a World War II Victory ship named after Bates College in Maine.[1]

The ship was a VC2-S-AP2, a 10.500 ton and 455 foot Victory ship constructed by the California Shipbuilding Corporation, in Los Angeles.[2][3] The keel was constructed on March 9, 1945, and it was christened the Bates Victory in Los Angeles Harbor on May 2, 1945 and named after Bates College. It was decommissioned on May 26, 1945. Bates Victory served the U.S. War Shipping Administration in Los Angeles (General SS Co.). In 1948 the ship was laid up in the Hudson River. In 1950 Remsen Heights, Isbrandtsen Co. Incorporated of New York acquired the ship. In 1962 American Export Lines of New York acquired the ship. In 1964 the ship was in service of the American Export Isbrandtsen Lines in New York. In 1968 the ship served the EASTERN STAR, Valmar Shipping Agency in New York. By 1970 PHILOMILA, Cia. Comercial Transatlantica S.A. in Panama acquired the ship. In 1971 Bates Victory was scrapped in Taiwan.[4]
