Sékou Berthé (born 7 October 1977 in Bamako, Mali) is a Malian football defender who last played for Persepolis in Iran Pro League.

Club career

On 7 August 2001, Troyes v Newcastle United in the 2001 UEFA Intertoto Cup Cup Berthe kept an in form Craig Bellamy at bay in a frentic game described as 'The Troyes defence held up well as the slippery conditions deteriorated'.[1]

Troyes went on to dominate the UEFA Intertoto Cup that year and The 2001 finals were won by Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain, and Troyes. All three teams advanced to the UEFA Cup.

On 23 September 2003, Berthe had his full starting League Cup debut for West Bromwich Albion v Hartlepool United, they went on to win 2-1.[2]

On 4 October 2003, Berthe had his full starting Championship league debut for West Bromwich Albion v Gillingham.[3]

On 27 October 2007, Berthe played 90 minutes v Helsingborgs in the 2007–08 UEFA Cup, Berthe was described by Henrik Larsson as 'In fairness to their centre half he gave us a tough time but we are looking forward to the second leg.[4]

On 29 November 2007, Berthe missed the 2007–08 UEFA Cup Galatasaray game due to a minor injury, Panionios missed the towering defender and they were beaten 3-0 at home.

On 6 December 2007, Berthe played 90 minutes away to Austria Vienna in the 2007–08 UEFA Cup. Panionios won 1-0 the big defender making an immediate impact on his return.

On 19 December 2007, Panionios lost 3-2 at home to Bordeaux in the 2007–08 UEFA Cup, Berthe assisting in the second half but Panionios were unable to proceed to the next round and finished 4th in Group H.

In March 2010, Berthe had a 3-week spell with Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle but due to international clearance was unable to play in any fixtures.

On 21 October 2010, Berthe commenced training with Iranian Pro League giants Persepolis. On 13 November 2010 Berthe signed a 6-month deal with Iran Pro League side Persepolis.[5][6]
