Gangaa (also knew as Sagar Ki Gangaa) is an 2015 Indian Hindi-language soap opera that aired daily Monday to Friday at 8:00 pm in the UK and at 8:30pm on &TV. It premiered on 2 March 2015.[1] The show went off air on 2 June 2017 completing 595 episodes.[2] The show is produced by Sphere Origins and initially starred child actors; Swar Hingonia as child Sagar and Ruhana Khanna as child Gangaa. However, when Gangaa and Sagar grew up, the child actors were replaced by Aditi Sharma and Vishal Vashishtha.

In 2015, the show won the award for Best Programme with a Social Message at the Indian Telly Awards, as well as a Best Child Actress award for Ruhana Khanna as young Ganga. In November 2016, Ruhana bags an award again for Desh Ki Ladli- Most Promising Child Star as Krishna at the Indian Telly Awards

On 29 August 2016, on Janmashtami, Ruhana Khanna, who played child Ganga, made her comeback as Ganga and Sagar's daughter Krishna, 8 months after being replaced by Aditi Sharma as grown up Ganga.[3]

On January 16, 2017, the show got revamped and the entire cast including lead Vishal Vashishtha, who played the grown up Sagar and storyline changed, except Aditi Sharma who continued to play the role of Gangaa. Shakti Anand was seen as the new lead as Shiv opposite Aditi Sharma. The other actors who played different roles left the show.[4]

Season 1

The first season of Gangaa.

The show centres around a young girl named Ganga, who becomes a widow on the same day as her marriage when her husband and her father, with whom she was very close, are killed in a riot on the bank of river Ganges in Varanasi. The show follows her struggle for her right to live happily, opposing all the restrictions placed upon widows by society as she is blamed for the death of her husband whom she never met or knew. Despite being at an age where Gangaa didn't know the meaning of marriage. However she is adopted by Lawyer Niranjan Chaturvedi and his wife Madhvi who soon treat her like their own daughter and like their two other kids, Pulkit the elder one and Sagar, the youngest one, despite the objection of Niranjan's mother, Ammaji .However Gangaa was raised by Ammaji who treated her like a widowed servant although know that she is not only a widow but also a child. Gangaa was taught all the rules and ways that a widow should live like much to her dislike. But she still loved Ammaji and never refused her.

The story develops on Ganga and Sagar's childhood friendship where he always stands by her side. One day, Sagar had to apply vermillion on Gangaa's forehead so as to save his life as told by Ammaji as Sagar had a hole in his heart. However Sagar and Ganga are separated as Sagar moves to London to study in a boarding school. This was planned by Madhvi and Ammaji as they thought that Sagar would be away from them if he continue living with Gangaa. Gangaa believed that she is only Sagar ki Gangaa.

Season 2

10 years later

10 years later in Gangaa;Sagar ki Gangaa.

Ganga has only been waiting for Sagar. Her love for him is implacable as she hides and adores vermillion believing she is fulfilling her duty as Sagar's wife. It is believed that Sagar is Gangaa's last destination ( The river Ganga only flows to Sagar Island) until eternity. Ganga has always loved Sagar truly and worshipped him, she believes that if there is no Sagar then there is no Gangaa. Unknowing that if there is no Sagar, the Shiv would be for Gangaa.

As Gangaa expresses her love for Sagar, she is shocked as he loves Jaanvi (a girl who studied with Sagar in London ). Gangaa is heartbroken. Slowly Sagar cares for her and finally he realises that he loves Gangaa but it was too late as Jaanvi and Sagar had done roka and gangaa couldn't accept sagar's love. Sagar expresses his love in front of everyone by applying vermilion in her forehead. His family is against this relationship as gangaa is a widow and they can't let their son marry a widow. Frustrated Sagar then on holi applies color on gangaa saying that she is no more a widow and decides to marry gangaa in court and then leave to Delhi. Meanwhile, Niranjan's eldest son, Pulkit decides to have his share of property and splits the house into two. Niranjan can't tolerate all this and he gets a heart attack. He pleads with gangaa to return Sagar to him. Gangaa agrees to give him his son Sagar listens this. He was very angry as according to him gangaa used him nd threw him like a toy. Frustrated Sagar marries jaanvi in anger gangaa tried to stop him but he didn't listen to her. At night Sagar realises that he had done wrong but gangaa didn't accept her love as Sagar was married. Gangaa then meets a lawyer named palash (Sarwar Ahuja) and decides to join internship under him. Meanwhile, sagar nd jaanvi relationship gets worse as he doesn't love her. Palash develops feeling for gangaa and by sagar's insistence he takes gangaa to a shop selects bride clothes for her nd then he expresses that he loves her and his mom wanted her to be DIL of his house. Gangaa is shocked and says she can't as she still loves sagar. Meanwhile, Yash insist jaanvi to tale more drugs which result into her death afraid Yash hags jaanvi's body to a ceiling fan to make it look like a suicide and leave a suicide note written by jaanvi under Yash's pressure that sagar is responsible for her death. Gangaa reaches home and Sagar hugs her nd cries his heart out loud. Police came and found that letter and arrest whole family except gangaa. Gangaa pleads palash to take sagar's case as none is ready to take sagar's the case he asks him some questions and she blurts out that she loves sagar and cannot live without him. Palash took up the case and the family is bailed out except sagar. As the case proceeds forward palash became negative nd thought that let sagar stay in jail so he and gangaa could marry nd he started hiding proofs. But gangaa nd Sagar finally manage to escape a witness from palash's hands nd he is sentenced to 2yr jail. Sagar came home, after many problems ammaji agreed to sagar and gangaa s marriage but before marriage their prabha Mami mixes something in drink and Sagar drinks it. Sagar in that drunken state came very close to gangaa. Next morning sagar doesn't remember anything that happen between him and gangaa. The marriage day came and while taking the pheras gangaa collapses and it is revealed that gangaa is pregnant sagar refuses to believe her that the child is his as he doesn't remember anything. He questions gangaa's character and doubt's her that she was with another man. Disheartened gangaa leaves the house she meets rahat who takes care of poor homeless girls gangaa joins her family Rahat's daughter zoya is raped and her husband is murdered by rudra ( friend of sagar) sagar refuses to believe that rudra can do this. Later it is believed Rahat and niranjan were college time lovers nd zoya was niranjan's daughter. Ammaji hide this secret from niranjan because rahat was from different religion and she sent niranjan to London floor studies. After a long court case drama zoya reveal to rudra that she loves him and the rape charges are fake and she only murdered her husband rudra records everything but it is deleted by zoya. He somehow records the confession.

Rahat sees the confession and slaps her daughter but zoya tries to snatch camera in that fight rahat slips and she falls from terrace and she died. Niranjan took zoya to his house which is not agreed by his wife nd sagar. Sagar decided to leave the house with her mother and goes to london. Meanwhile, some months leap has been shown and Gangaa gives birth to a baby girl baby on the day of Krishna Janmanashtri and that's she named her Krishna. Niranjan also realises that Gangaa was telling the truth that Sagar is Krishna's father. Gangaa decides to be Krishna's both moter and father

After 7 years

Inspired by another show, Yeh Vaada Raha (TV series), Ganga is seen bringing up her and Sagar's daughter Krishna alone. Sagar who is unaware that Krishna is his daughter comes to Banaras on his dadi's insistence.In jungle he came across Krishna who is lost and takes care of her. Krishna is instantly attached to him. He knows that she is Gangaa's daughter as she looks exactly like Gangaa. He drops her home without meeting Gangaa. One day sagar nd gangaa came across each other Krishna recognizes sagar as the man who helped her in jungle. She is pleased to see him back but gangaa takes her home. Sagar plans to leave Banaras whereas gangaa cannot answer Krishna"a question about her father she herself set out to find her father. She again comes across sagar but collapses in his arms she is rushed to hospital where gangaa reveal that Krishna has hole in her heart nd it is genetic Krishna's father had the same problem in childhood. Sagar is shocked nd he questions gangaa that who is Krishna's father but she doesn't reply. Sagar refuses to go to London without finding answers. one day in temple Yash came nd took Krishna blackmail gangaa that he will kill her daughter he reveal that his mother mixed something in sagar's drink that's why he doesn't remember anything. Sagar nd family is shocked gangaa nd Krishna goes to their home. Sagar says sorry nd ask for forgiveness but gangaa doesn't budge nd isn't ready listen anything as sagar questioned her character but sagar tells her that he came for Krishna nd ask Krishna to come with him but gangaa stops sagra. He then sends custody of krishna later it is followed by a long court case sagar wins the case as Krishna chooses sagar as instructed by him. They somehow managed nd convince gangaa to stay at house for one week nd they vl prove that who loves Krishna more. This is followed by some funny nd cute challenges after one week Krishna tells sagar that she had to write about a favorite family member she wrote about sagar nd speaks a beautiful speech in front of school nd all family members gangaa is emotional nd she plans to take Krishna to her village nd vl being her home soon but sagar comes nd Krishna cries as she doesn't want to leave her father gangaa comes home on the pretext that she need to take some things sagar plans to go to London for some days gangaa is shocked to hear this but she doesn't stop him nd he leaves.When niranjan came he cannot tolerate nd he collapses it is revealed that he has blood cancer. As according to niranjan's wish gangaa nd sagar finally marry but for his happiness only but at night of the marriage gangaa apologize to sagar for her behavior nd not letting him forgive. But sagar says it's late and thinks that it's is his turn to tease her. After all drama niranjan finally survives which followed a tale of conspiracy. Everything is going fine nd sagar is successful as gangaa expresses her love for sagar.

On makar sakaranti gangaa sagar nd Krishna witness a major accident in river gangaa when gangaa lose her memory.

Season 3

The season 3 of Gangaa; Shiv ki Gangaa.

A guy named Shiv saves Gangaa's life. He was marrying a girl called Gangaa who was wearing the same saree that Gangaa was wearing. Shiv mistook Sagar's Gangaa as his own Gangaa. Sagar tries to find Gangaa but Gangaa, as told by Shiv, goes to his house as his bride. After all harsh treatment, Gangaa makes her own place and both Gangaa and Shiv started developing feelings for each other.

Just then, Sagar comes there, finding Gangaa. He stays there for many days as he was injured. One day, fortunately, Shiv sees Sagar's family and is shocked to see Gangaa there. Gangaa shows his face to Sagar and Sagar instantly recognizes his Gangaa. He forces Gangaa to come with him. Shiv finds out the truth and is shocked when he learns that Gangaa is actually Sagar's wife.

He returns Gangaa to him and on the way, some goons attack them and Gangaa's memory comes back. Shiv's brother, Pratap shoots Sagar on chest (although he was going to shoot Shiv but Sagar comes in between). He cries and pleads Shiv for help. There, at the hospital, doctors couldn't save Sagar. Sagar made Shiv promise that he will not leave Sangaa.

Shiv fills Gangaa's forehead with his blood as a sign of vermilion. Gangaa denies being Shiv's wife and wants to be Sagar's widow. It is decided that Gangaa has to stay with Shiv for 1 month. Gangaa comes to know that Krishna is dead. This leaves Gangaa devastated. She slowly develops feelings for Shiv.

Soon, they get married.

Parallel story arcs

Apart from the love story of Gangaa-Sagar; Shiv-Gangaa, the show also focussed on Madhvi and Niranjan before and even after the 10 years leap like before the 10 years leap, Madhvi thought that Nirangan had an affair with her cousin, Barkha and got separated from Nirangan but later she came to know that it was fake and reunited with Nirangan. However, after the years leap, it was revealed that Nirangan had an affair with a Muslim girl named Rahat which lead distance between him and Madhvi (for more information, see the plot). With the departure of Madhvi from the Chaturvedi family, the relationship of Pulkit and Supriya became worsen than before and also because of the miscarrige of Supriya. Pulkit started feeling lonely and started having a secret affair with Gangaa's frien and homemate, Kashish who also truly loved him. But their affair got reaveled and they had to break up. But the relationship of Supriya and Pulkit retained with the arrival of their adopted daughter, Juhi. Later on, Madhvi and Niranjan were also reunited. Also, when Pulkit was young he loved his classmate, Saloni till he grew up but Saloni stopped loving him as he had no good job. Then, he married Supriya with whom he soon fell in love.
