The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People is a hospital under construction that will specialise in paediatric healthcare. The hospital will form part of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh campus at Little France, in Edinburgh and is scheduled to open in 2018. The hospital replaces the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Sciennes. The facility will provide care for children and young people from birth to around 16 years of age.

Background

The hospital was designed by HLM Architects,[1] with construction carried out by Brookfield Multiplex. Construction began in February 2015.[2]

In 2005, NHS Lothian decided to develop plans to move the Sick Kids from its present site to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France on the south-east edge of the city. A business case for the project was approved by the Scottish Government in January 2012, with the new facility expected to open in mid-2017.[3] In August 2016, it was announced the project would be delayed until spring 2018.[4] The delays were caused by adverse weather conditions and two of the projects builders entering administration.[5] The new building at Little France will also accommodate the department of clinical neurosciences who will move across from the Western General Hospital and the department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) who will move from the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.[6] The new hospital will have 233 beds.[7] It will be built under the Scottish Futures Trust.[8]

In May 2017, it was announced the new hospital would be called Royal Hospital for Children and Young People.[9] The facility will treat patients up to the age of 16.[10]
