RoboCup
RoboCup is an annual international robotics competition proposed[1] and founded in 1996 (Pre-RoboCup) by a group of university professors (among which Hiroaki Kitano, Manuela M. Veloso, and Minoru Asada). The aim of such a competition consists of promoting robotics and AI research, by offering a publicly appealing, but formidable challenge.
“Competition pushes advances in technologies. What we learn from robots playing soccer or navigating a maze can be applied to industry and help us solve difficult real-world problems,” according to Professor Maurice Pagnucco, Head of the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW.[2]
The name RoboCup is a contraction of the competition's full name, "Robot Soccer World Cup", but there are many other stages of the competition such as "RoboCupRescue", "RoboCup@Home" and "RoboCupJunior". In 2016, the world's competition was held in Leipzig, Germany.[3] RoboCup 2017 was held in Nagoya, Japan.[4] Professor Itsuki Noda[5] is the current president of RoboCup since 2014.
The official goal of the project:
- "By the middle of the 21st century, a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players shall win a soccer game, complying with the official rules of FIFA, against the winner of the most recent World Cup.[6]"
RoboCup leagues
The contest currently has six major competition domains, each with a number of leagues and subleagues:
- RoboCup Soccer
- Standard Platform League (formerly Four Legged League)
- Small Size League
- Middle Size League
- Simulation League
- 2D Soccer Simulation
- 3D Soccer Simulation | Soccer Simulation 3D League Homepage
- Mixed Reality Competition[7][8]
- Humanoid League Humanoid League homepage
- RoboCup Rescue Rescue Leagues Homepage
- RoboCup@Home,[9] which debuted in 2006, and focuses on the introduction of autonomous robots to human society
- RoboCup@Work,[10] which debuted in 2016, and "targets the use of robots in work-related scenarios".
- RoboCup Logistics League[11] is part of the RoboCup Major Leagues since 2012 and focuses on flexible solutions for industrial production using self-organizing robots.
- RoboCupJunior[12]
- Soccer Challenge
- OnStage (formerly Dance) Challenge
- Rescue Challenge
Each team is fully autonomous in all RoboCup leagues. Once the game starts, the only input from any human is from the referee.[13]

The formal RoboCup was preceded by the (often unacknowledged) first International Micro Robot World Cup Soccer Tournament (MIROSOT) held by KAIST in Taejon, Korea, in November 1996. This was won by an American team from Newton Labs, and the competition was shown on CNN.[17]
