"Jimmy" Rim Jihoon (born 28 September 1980) is executive advisor and former CEO of the South Korean company technology company Kakao.[1] He was appointed to this position in August, 2015, at 34 years of age, making him the youngest CEO among South Korea's top 500 companies. The second youngest CEO after Rim is 46 years old.[2]

Rim spent the last decade as a venture capitalist, first at Softbank Ventures and later at K Cube Ventures. A graduate of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, he worked at global consulting firms and Naver, the operator of South Korea's most-visited online search engine, before joining Softbank Ventures in Seoul.[3]

Kakao

Jihoon is acknowledged for successfully expanding Kakao's business into finance, content, mobility and investing heavily in artificial intelligence[4]. Also, during his two and a half term, revenue and operating income of the company doubled.

Acquisition of $1.6B LOEN Entertainment [5]was evaluated as one of the best M&As in Korean tech industry.

In recognition of his stellar performance, Jihoon was ranked No.1 in “2017 Korea’s Best CEO” survey, and also was selected as "2018 Korea’s Top 10 Hero" by the biggest business media group, MBN. In academia, he received the "AIS leadership award", a prize presented to one person a year who demonstrated exemplary leadership and innovation by Association for Information System.

KCube Ventures

Jihoon founded K Cube Ventures[6], an early stage venture capital in Korea. The firm quickly grew to become one of the most reputable VC firms in Korea and was also ranked #7 by CBInsights[7] in the category of '2017, The most active 'corporate venture capital' in the world. (K Cube Ventures became a CVC after being acquired by Kakao in 2015)

Early Days

Became a venture capital in 2007, working for Softbank Ventures, investment arm of Japanese Telco Softbank. Jihoon was famous for actively investing in internet startups when it was not common in South Korea. "Anipang", the famous mobile game that made 20 million Koreans play was the most famous investment that he made.[8]

Before Softbank Ventures, Jihoon worked at The Boston Consulting Group, Naver and Accenture.

Awards

  • The AIS Leadership Excellence Award: [9]The Association for Information Systems Leadership Excellence Award will be presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated exemplary leadership and innovation in the use and development of information systems.
  • 2017 Korea's Best CEO[10]: Jihoon was selected as Best CEO by Insight Korea. This was based on a survey done by a research group and voted by university/college students. He got 12.6% of total votes, preceding JY Lee, vice chairman of Samsung Group who got 6.8% and ranked #2.
  • Korea's Top 10 Hero: [11]Every year, MBN(Maekyoung Business Newspaper, the largest biz media in Korea) selects and announces Korea's TOP 10 Heros. 10 people who are recognized as top achievers in their areas (actor, actress, sport athletes, business person, government officials etc.) receive the prize.
