Rhyse Martin (born 1 March 1993) is a Papua New Guinean international rugby league footballer who plays for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the National Rugby League. He plays primarily as a second row.
Background
Martin was born in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. He is of Papua New Guinean descent through his father, who is from Hula in the Central Province.[2]
Martin was raised in the Whitsundays, playing his junior rugby league for the Proserpine Brahmans. As a teenager, Martin moved to Townsville, where he attended Kirwan State High School and played for Townsville Brothers. After graduating in 2010, he moved to Sydney to join the Sydney Roosters.[3]
Playing career
In 2011, Martin played for the Sydney Roosters SG Ball Cup side.[4] Martin played for the Roosters' NYC team in 2012 and 2013, captaining the side.[5] In 2013, Martin was selected to represent the Queensland under-20 rugby league team.[6]
In 2014, Martin joined the Roosters' NRL squad but did not make his first grade debut, spending the season playing for the their feeder club, the Newtown Jets.[7]
In 2015, Martin returned to North Queensland, joining the newly formed Intrust Super Cup team, the Townsville Blackhawks. In May 2015, he made his international debut for Papua New Guinea in the Melanesian Cup.[8] In May 2016, Martin was selected again for Papua New Guinea for the Melanesian Cup but withdrew due to personal reasons.[9] Martin played two seasons for the Blackhawks, being named at second row in the 2016 Intrust Super Cup team of the year.[10]
In September 2016, Martin signed a two-year deal with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.[11]
Martin made his NRL debut, in round 9 of the 2018 season against the Brisbane Broncos. Martin scored on debut quickly becoming a starter in the second row.
On the 23 of July he signed a one year contract extension with the bulldogs, kicking an impressive 93.8 percent as well as scoring 4 tries in only eight first grade appearances. [12]
Personal life
Martin's older brother, Tyson, currently plays for the Mackay Cutters and is also a Papua New Guinean international.
