Rebecca Roanhorse

Rebecca Roanhorse (born 1971) is a fantasy writer from New Mexico. Her story "Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™" won both the Hugo Award for Best Short Story and the Nebula Award for Best Short Story in 2018.

Biography

Rebecca Roanhorse was born in Conway, Arkansas, of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo and African-American heritage, and raised in Fort Worth, Texas.[1] She graduated from Yale University, and holds a law degree from the University of New Mexico. She also attended the Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation workshop. Roanhorse is married and has a daughter.[2]

Works

Her first novel, Trail of Lightning, was published in 2018. It is an "apocalyptic adventure" set on a former Navajo reservation, with mostly Navajo characters, and is the first in a series.[3][4] The next book in the series, Storm of Locusts, is scheduled for a 2019 release.[5][6] She is also the author of a children's book, Race to the Sun (forthcoming, 2019). Another fantasy title, Between Earth and Sky, has been announced for 2020.[3]

Roanhorse was a 2017 Campbell Award finalist for Best New Science Fiction and Fantasy writer. Her short story "Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™" (Apex Magazine 2017) was nominated for a Sturgeon Award and a finalist for the Locus Award, and won both the Hugo Award for Best Short Story and the Nebula Award for Best Short Story in 2018.[7][8] LeVar Burton read this story on his LeVar Burton Reads podcast in 2018.[9] Roanhorse's autobiographical essay "Postcards from the Apocalypse" explores the subject of Indigenous Futurism, a phrase first coined by Grace L. Dillon.[2][10][11]
