Ratnesh Pandey (born 12 May 1985) is an Indian mountaineer, who climbed Mount Everest in 2016[3][4][5] and first in the world to recite national anthem of his country at the highest peak of Mount Everest.[6] He is the first mountaineer from Madhya Pradesh to scale Mount Everest.[7]

He also holds Guinness World Records in motorbike stunts.[8][9] He received the Khel Alankaran award by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in November 2016.[10]

Early life

He hails from Satna, Madhya Pradesh. He is a BBA graduate.[11] He did his basic and advance mountaineering course from Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Minali.[5]

Career

Pandey scaled the Mount Everest in on May 21, 2016.[3][12] By reciting the national anthem of India, Jana Gana Mana, he become first in the world to recite national anthem of his country at the top of Mount Everest, reportedly by The Free Press Journal.[6][13]

In September 2016, Pandey climbed Mount Damavand, the Iran's highest mountain and Mount Sabalan, the third-highest montain, in a mountaineering expedition organized in Iran by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation.[1][14]

In April 2015, Ratnesh Pandey succeeded in climbing 22,000 feet of Mount Everest, but couldn’t make it to the top of Mount Everest due to April 2015 Nepal earthquake, which causes avalanche on Everest and 21 climbers died.[15] It was reported by Hindi daily newspaper Patrika that Pandey was trapped on Mount Everest after quake[16], later he was successfully rescued.[17]

He set the Guinness World Records[18] for longest continuous ride standing on the seat of a motorcycle[9] by covering over 32.3 kilometers on a bike in a standing position.[19][20] However, it was reported that the record was broken by the Indian Army in September 2016,[21][22] but still the record is in the name of Ratnesh Pandey on Guinness World Records.[9]

In August 2018, Pandey successfully climbed the Mount Elbrus- 18,511 ft– peak twice and hoisted the National flag of India and the flag of Sports and Youth Welfare Department of Madhya Pradesh on the eastern and western peaks of Mount Elbrus.[2][23]

He along with Nihal Sarkar represented India in UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup 2017, held in Italy.[24]
