Doddington is a village and civil parish in Cambridgeshire, 4 miles (6 km) between Chatteris and March.

History

Historically, Doddington was one of the largest parishes in England. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census is 2,181 .[1] Under the Doddington Rectory Division Act of 1856 it was divided into seven rectories, Benwick, Doddington, Wimblington, March Old Town, March St Peter, March St John and March St Mary.

In the centre of the village is a clocktower built in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The village is also notable for its large carnival held on the first Saturday in July, followed in the afternoon by a children's sports event.

Set in Fenland, between Chatteris and March, Doddington has two churches, St Mary’s Parish Church and the Methodist Chapel. The village has almost 1000 dwellings.

Amenities

The village has two public houses, The Three Tuns and The George. Local amenities includes a post office, a few shops, a fish and chip/fast food outlet, ladies and gents hairdressers, a doctors surgery and an NHS minor injuries unit.

Doddington has a Village Hall as well as two sports fields, one with a pavilion containing changing rooms, catering facilities and multi purpose room. Doddington has Guides, Scouts, Women’s Institute, the women’s section of the Royal British Legion, Short Mat Bowls Club, Outdoor Bowls Club, Cricket Club, Football teams, and an Under 5’s group.

Doddington has a monthly village magazine, 'Doddington Doings'.

Government

The village is under the administration of Fenland District Council.

Personalities

Christopher Tye, composer and organist, was rector here after taking holy orders. Jonnie Peacock, MBE, sprinter who won gold at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, wasn’t born in the village of Doddington but his mother now resides there.
