Ranko Popović (Serbian Cyrillic: Paнкo Пoпoвић, pronounced [râːŋko pǒpoʋitɕ];[1][2] born 26 June 1967) is a Serbian retired footballer who played as a central defender, and a current coach. He also holds an Austrian passport.

Club career

Born in Peć, SAP Kosovo, SR Serbia, Popović played in the Yugoslav First League with FK Partizan.[3] He also had a brief spell with UD Almería in the Spanish Segunda División.[4]

Coach career

Japan

In July 2009, Popović accepted an offer to coach the J-league club Oita Trinita, which had experienced 14 consecutive defeats in the season. In his first six matches, the team only won once, but in the last ten matches of the season, it did not lose once (5 wins and 5 draws). This result earned him and offer to coach the team for the next season, but the team nearly went bankrupt, and his contract had to be canceled.

Popović was appointed manager of Machida Zelvia on 15 December 2010.

Popovic also subsequently went on to become manager of some of the most recognized clubs in Japan including FC Tokyo and Cerezo Osaka. During this period he has also coached Japanese clubs in the Asian Champions League Competition.

Popovic is well known for having worked with many young players at his clubs who have gone on to play in Europe and also the Japan National Team. Close to 15 players went on to play for the Japan and South Korean National Teams after he worked with them at the club level.

Spain

On 24 November 2014, after stints at FC Tokyo and Cerezo Osaka, he was appointed at the helm of Real Zaragoza, replacing the fired Víctor Muñoz.[5] While at Zaragoza, he was named "Coach of the Month" in October 2015. He also led Real Zaragoza to the finals of the La Liga play-offs, but fell short losing to Las Palmas.

Popović was dismissed on 20 December 2015, after a 1–3 loss against Gimnàstic de Tarragona.[6]

Thailand

On 25 August 2016, Buriram United F.C. of Thai League T1 appointed Ranko Popović as the club head coach to fill the vacant role after the dismissal of Afshin Ghotbi.[7] He made the official debut on 10 September 2016, guided Buriram to win 2–1 over Bangkok Glass F.C. at home in the game of Thai League. In October 2016, he led Buriram United to win the Thai League Cup. He officially left Buriram United on 10 June 2017 on mutual terms. He left the club sitting on the top of the Thai league rankings.

India

On 25 September 2017, FC Pune City of Indian Super League appointed Ranko Popović as the club head coach.[8]
