Controversies

2018 Threat to kidnap girls who reject proposals from boys

In September 2018, Kadam made a "threat to kidnap girls that reject proposals from boys". A woman social activist has lodged a police complaint against him and Kadam has been booked under various sections of the law. [3] A video of Kadam making this statement at a Dahi Handi event he organised at Ghatkopar on Monday was broadcast on television channels. Kadam says on video, "If you tell me that you have proposed to a girl and she says no to you, I will help you 100 per cent. I will tell you to bring your parents to me first, and if they, too, like the girl, I will kidnap her and hand her over to you. You can take my mobile number and call me."[4]

Kadam's statements resulted in strong reactions. Former Indian National Congress Maharashtra minister Subodh Saoji, announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh to anyone who 'chops off the tongue' of Kadam.[5] Preeti Sharma Menon, a member of AAP’s national executive said, “Dear Devendra Fadnavis, Congratulations on the new job you have given your MLAs of abducting girls. Is it national policy for BJP? MLA Ram Kadam offers to abduct girls for boys. He even offers hotline number for it.” Aditya Thackeray, from the Shiv Sena said “One BJP MLA has offered from a stage to help boys kidnap girls and marry them even against the will of the girls. I guess he believes marriage is like forming a govt. Ashamed and disgraced that he sits in the legislative assembly of Maharashtra- a land of culture & women liberty.” He further questioned Devendra Fadnavis government on the action would be taken on the leader. He tweeted, “Not just an outright apology from him, but I’d want to know from the Home Minister of Maharashtra what action will be taken for openly making such statements that threaten the safety of girls and offering safety to those wanting to kidnap them.” [6]

Fake tweet about Sonali Bendre's death

In September 2018, he posted a false tweet about Sonali Bendre's death. Kadam was criticized for spreading false rumor and faced massive backlash, following which he deleted his tweet and again tweeted for well being of Bendre stating that his tweet was influenced by false rumours.[5]
