He graduated from Rishi Bankim Chandra Colleges, Naihati. He is one of the most commercially successful film-makers in Tollywood.[3] Before directing his debut film, he was busy in Bengali TV. Raj Chakraborty was associated with Zee Bangla's popular laughter show Mirakkel, hosted by Mir, and dance competition Dance Bangla Dance, judged by Mithun Chakraborty, during their initial days. He also directed Star Jalsha's laughter programme I Laugh You[4], assisting mega serial-maker Arindam Dey. He went solo with the telefilm Noder Chaand after assisting Dey for a couple of years. He has made 18 telefilms since. Raj's biggest small-screen venture was with the hit comedy show Mirakkel, which airs on Zee Bangla.
Biography
Raj Chakraborty was born on 21 February 1975 in Halisahar, a small town in West Bengal. He comes from a lower-middle class family of five members. He has two sisters who are married and settled. His father, Shree Krishnashankar Chakraborty, worked at Rishi Bankim Chandra Colleges. His mother Shreemati Leela Chakraborty has been a homemaker and according to Raj, she is the one who has been his inspiration, his critic, his fear, his pride and the heart of the family.
After earning a bachelor's degree in arts from RBC College, Naihati, Raj began his career as an actor in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Raj had been an active theatre person since his school years. After a disagreement with his parents, he left home to settle in Kolkata and chase his acting dreams. When he found himself unable to get satisfactory roles, he changed his plans and decided to become a director. He was recruited as an assistant director by director Arindam Dey (popularly known as Mamdo Da) in 2000. After six years of association, hard work, training and dedication, Raj directed his first telefilm titled Noder Chaand. This was successful, and he followed it with a series of many telefilms, talk shows, non-fiction reality shows, which gave large viewership to the channels. Raj Chakraborty was a key member of the crews of iconic regional TV series like Mirakkel and Dance Bangla Dance. He has contributed to the changing face of Bengali entertainment television.
Career
Raj Chakraborty entered the Kolkata film industry as film director by directing Chirodini Tumi Je Amar in 2008. The movie starred newcomers Rahul and Priyanka. Jeet Ganguly was roped in for composing the music of the film. The songs of the film were an instant hit upon release, particularly amongst the youth. The film got mixed response from critics but broke all box office records. The film had an outstanding run at the cinemas and, at that time, was one of the highest grossing films of Tollywood. Jeet Ganguly got the Best Music award for this film. This film was the turning point in the careers of all those who worked in it.
Raj introduced talents (both in acting and music) who would go on to become household names among Bengalis to the film industry of Bengal. Actors like Priyanka, Rahul, Rittika, Bonny, Koushani, Nusrat and Rukmini had their debuts through the lens of Chakraborty. He had contributions towards the successful careers of such actors as Dev, Subhashree, Soham, Mimi Chakraborty, Payel Sarkar, Sayani Ghosh, too.
Music composer Indradeep Dasgupta's arguably biggest commercial successes are in Raj Chakraborty's Le Chakka and the song Bojhena Shey Bojhena. Music Director Arindam Chatterjee got his big break when he got the opportunity to compose songs for Raj's Bojhena Shey Bojhena (except for the title track) and Borbaad.
He decided to start his own production — Raj Chakraborty Productions. He began by producing for television. Raj Chakraborty wants to get into film production someday with his own production house.
