Quisisana was a German company that introduced the world's first automat restaurant in 1895 in Berlin, Germany.[1] Quisisana also manufactured automat machines and equipment.[2]

After the introduction of the first automat in Berlin, the company soon expanded into other European cities, and also purveyed their concept in the United States.[1] The first automat in the United States was opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as Horn & Hardart in 1902, using Quisisana's equipment, technology and concept.[1][2][3] Horn & Hardart later further developed the technology for their restaurants, and eventually devised their own automat machines.[2][3]
