Quandl (/ˈkwɑːndəl/) is a platform for financial, economic, and alternative data that serves investment professionals. Quandl sources data from over 500 publishers.[1] All Quandl's data are accessible via an API.[2] API access is possible through packages for multiple programming languages including R, Python, Matlab, Maple and Stata.[3][4]
An Excel add-in allows access to data, including stock price information.
Quandl's sources include open data from providers such as the UN, Worldbank and central banks; core financial data from providers such as CLS Group, Zacks, and ICE; and alternative data from Dun & Bradstreet, along with numerous confidential sources.[5][6]
History
Quandl is based in Toronto, Canada and was founded in 2011 by Tammer Kamel and Abraham Thomas.[7] In September 2012, Quandl raised an undisclosed round of seed funding, followed by a $5.45mn Series A from August Capital in October 2013. The company's Series B for $15mn closed in July 2016 and was led by Nexus Venture Partners.[8][9]
Since its launch, Quandl has been discussed as a disruptor in the traditional financial data sector.[10] With over 200,000 users[11] Quandl has been considered an alternative to the Bloomberg Terminal and Thomson One.[12][13]
Products
Quandl is a provider of alternative data products.[14] Quandl sells alternative datasets, defined as "any data that is not typically made available to Wall Street firms by traditional sources".[14] Quandl "sources, evaluates and productizes undiscovered data" and then sells it to financial institutions, who use it to enhance their trading strategies.[15]
Quandl also offers market data through its marketplace. Some data sets are free while others require a subscription. Different datasets have different prices. The company contains hundreds of databases and providers, ranging from stock price history to global fundamentals to commodities data to Asian market data.[16]
Quandl has an exclusive relationship with CLS Group in London, and is the only source of commercial FX volume data[17]
