Poola Rangadu is a 1967 Telugu drama film, produced by D. Madhusudhana Rao under the Annapurna Pictures banner and directed by Adurthi Subba Rao. It stars Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Jamuna, Shobhan Babu and Vijaya Nirmala in the lead roles, with music composed by Saluri Rajeswara Rao. The film was loosely based on A. J. Cronin's Beyond This Place, which had earlier been adapted into the 1955 Bengali movie Sabar Uparey and the 1958 Hindi movie Kala Pani. The film was remade in Kannada in 1968 as Rowdy Ranganna, in Tamil in 1970 as En Annan and in Hindi in 1972 as Jeet. The film was recorded as a Super Hit at the box office.[1]

Plot

Ranga Rao (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) is called "Poolarangadu", because of his purity of life. His father Veerayya (Chittor V. Nagaiah) is a manager at a mill, and is framed for the murder of one of the partners, Purushotham. He is sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit. Rangadu works hard to get his sister Padma (Vijaya Nirmala) educated. She marries a Dr. Prasad (Shobhan Babu), who happens to be Purushotham's son. When he finds out she is Veerayya's daughter, he leaves her. Rangadu is enraged and beats the guy Narasimhulu (Chalam), who informs Prasad. Rangadu is sent to jail. There he meets his father, learns about his innocence and vows to get him out. Once Rangadu is released, he takes the help of Narasimhulu, who works at their house, and his lover Venkata Lakshmi to earn the goodwill of the other two partners and finally exposes them. They cause fights between the partners, which makes them reveal the past that they are the ones who killed Purushotham, while recording all that on a tape recorder. Veerayya is released, Rangadu marries his lover Venkata Lakshmi (Jamuna) and Prasad takes Padma back.

Box-office

  • The film ran for more than 100 days in 11 centers in Andhra Pradesh. The film was remade in Tamil as En Annan with MGR and became a super hit there also.[2]
