Pukepoto is home to two separate marae (Māori meeting grounds): Te Rarawa Marae and Te Uri o Hina Marae. Both marae are associated with the māori hapū (subtribe) Ngāti Te Ao, Tahāwai and Te Uri o Hina, which are part of Te Rarawa iwi (tribe). Ancestrally both marae connect to the maunga (mountain) Taumatamahoe and the repo/wai (wetland/water) Tāngonge.

Descendants of these marae identify with the ancestors Tumoana (captain of the Tinana waka), Tarutaru (who consolidated Te Rarawa iwi to revenge the death of Te Ripo), and Ngamotu (the daughter of Tarutaru).

Both marae include a wharenui (meeting house) and wharekai (dining hall). At Te Rarawa Marae, the wharenui is called Te Rarawa and the wharekai is called Mahi Tahi. [5][6] On Te Uri o Hina Marae the wharenui is called Hohou-te-rongo and the wharekai is called Ngamotu (named after the daughter of Tarutaru).[7][8][9]
