ProtonVPN is a virtual private network (VPN) service provider operated by the Swiss company ProtonVPN AG.[1] The company is a beneficiary of Proton Technologies AG, the company behind the email service ProtonMail.[1] According to ProtonVPN's official website, ProtonVPN and ProtonMail operate on "completely segregated infrastructures" for technical security reasons.[1]
Company
ProtonVPN AG is a beneficiary of Proton Technologies AG, the company behind the email service ProtonMail, and Fondation Genevoise pour l'Innovation Technologique (FONGIT), a non-profit foundation financed by the Swiss Federal Commission for Technology and Innovation.[1] According to ProtonVPN's official website, ProtonVPN AG is legally separate from Proton Technologies AG.[1]
Features
- Secure Core – a feature that aims to protect users against traffic correlation attacks.[2]
- Strong Encryption – all traffic is encrypted with AES-256, key exchange is done with 2048-bit RSA, and HMAC with SHA-256 is used for authentication.[3]
- Forward Secrecy – encrypted traffic cannot be captured and decrypted later if the encryption key from a subsequent session gets compromised.[4]
- No Logs Policy – by TheBestVPN.com team, ProtonVPN has been listed as top 5 for 'Strict no logging' VPN.[5]
- Strong Protocols – ProtonVPN only uses the OpenVPN protocol.[6]
- DNS Leak Prevention – this prevents that connections to the default DNS servers of the system are made to prevent leaks.[7]
- Kill Switch – their software has a built-in kill switch that will interrupt a user's Internet connection if their VPN server connection drops. This would help to keep the user's true IP address from being accidentally shown.[8]
- Tor over VPN – selected Tor servers allow users to route all of their Internet traffic through the Tor anonymity network.[8]
Reception
In a July 2017 review by TechRadar, ProtonVPN received four out of five stars; the verdict read, "ProtonVPN offers great security and we love the Windows client, but there are cheaper services around."[9] A November 2017 review of the free version by the same TechRadar writer concluded: "If you can live with a choice of only three locations, ProtonVPN's free plan is an excellent choice [...] It’s well worth checking out, if only as a backup for your existing VPN service."[10] Another November 2017 review, however, by That One Privacy Site states of its paid service: "ProtonVPN got a lukewarm reaction from me [...] In the end, (especially given its high asking price), I believe there are better services available on the market."[11]
