Pretty Rhythm (プリティーリズム, Puritī Rizumu) is a Japanese Taito Type X2 arcade game by Takara Tomy. It has been adapted into a manga series by Mari Asabuki. An anime adaptation by Tatsunoko Production, titled Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream (プリティーリズム・オーロラドリーム, Puritī Rizumu: Ōrora Dorīmu), aired in Japan between April 2011 and March 2012.[1] This was followed by a sequel, Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future (プリティーリズム・ディアマイフューチャー, Puritī Rizumu: Dia Mai Fyūchā), which aired between April 2012 and March 2013.[2] A third series, Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live (プリティーリズム・レインボーライブ, Puritī Rizumu: Reinbō Raibu), aired from April 6, 2013 to March 29, 2014.[3] A film was released on March 8, 2014.[4][5] A fourth anime television series, Pretty Rhythm: All-Star Selection (プリティーリズム・オールスターセレクション, Puritī Rizumu: Ōrusutā Serekushon) aired from April 5, 2014 to June 14, 2014.[6] The first season is licensed by Animax Asia in Southeast Asia. The series was succeeded by PriPara in 2014.

Story

The franchise takes place in a world where Prism Shows, performances that are a combination of singing, dancing, fashion, and ice skating, are popular. The skaters, known as Prism Stars, use Prism Stones to coordinate their dresses and perform Prism Jumps to appeal to their fans.

Aurora Dream

Aurora Dream revolves around a klutzy girl named Aira Harune who, along with another girl named Rizumu Amamiya, is scouted to become a Prism Star. At the beginning, Aira starts to get cold feet as she has no idea of what a Prism Show is, and Rizumu is centered on her dream of performing the mysterious "Aurora Rising", a legendary Prism Jump which her mother once performed. While forming a friendship, Aira and Rizumu are joined by a veteran Prism Star, Mion Takamine, a stubborn idol who is one year older than the two. As their friendship grows, the three girls form a group called as "MARs" and work towards performing the "Aurora Rising".

The girls face rivalry with the comedy and Prism Idol duet, "Serenon". They later encounter a younger girl named Chris Kaname who is able to copy others' prism jumps, including the "Aurora Rising". Later, MARs will find out that there's more to the Aurora Rising than what meets the eye, and that mastering it is not anyone's cup of tea. It is also revealed that Rizumu's mother is Sonata Kanzaki, a legendary idol who performed the Aurora Rising but disappeared soon after, where she now has a strained relationship with her daughter.

Dear My Future

Dear My Future takes place three years after the events of "Aurora Dream", where all the members of MARs have become Prism Queens. The series follows a new idol, Mia Ageha, who aspires to become a greater idol than Aira. Forming her own group, "Prizmmy", alongside her friends Reina Miyama, Karin Shijimi and Ayami Ooruri, she works hard fervently to reach her goal and fulfill her dream. In addition, Mia encounters her Korean childhood friend, Hye In, who has formed her own idol group with four other girls named as Shi Yoon, Jae Eun, Chae Kyoung and So Min, with the group named "Puretty".

Mia and Hye In share only one dream - to become the no.1 Prism star in the world. However, they will soon find out that becoming no.1 in the world is no easy task because a mysterious man who wanted to put an end to Prism Shows now possesses something that will obliterate the history of Prism Shows off of the face of the Earth. It's up to Prizmmy and Puretty to save the Prism Show from total annihilation.

Rainbow Live

Rainbow Live story sets in a different background from the two previous series.

Naru Ayase is an 8th grader who can see the colors of music when she listens to it. For Naru, who is extremely good at decorating Prism Stones, becoming the owner of a shop like "Dear Crown" has been her dream. One day, she finds out that the manager of a newly opened shop named 'Prism Stone' is recruiting middle school girls who can perform a Prism Show and immediately applies. Naru begins to do a Prism Show at the audition and an aura she's never experienced spreads out in front of her. She even executes a new technique known as 'Prism Live'. At that moment, a mysterious, amnesiac girl named Rinne asks her if she can see "Rainbow Music".

She later befriends two of her classmates: Ann Fukuhara, who is the club president of the school's PE club, and Ito 'Cross' Suzuno, a former delinquent. After their Prism Show evaluation, Ann becomes the store's cakes and sweets manager, while Ito becomes the store's make up manager at Prism Stone along with Naru as the main manager. Upon doing Prism Live their pair friends Lovelyn, Poppun and Kurrun get turned into instruments: a guitar, drumsticks and keyboard respectively.

Later, the three girls form a group called "Happy RAIN", but they are constantly irritated by Bell Renjouji, Wakana Morizono and Otoha Takanashi who are students of Edel Rose, the famous school for education in Prism Shows. Later, it is shown that these girls become good friends and the three of them also find their pair friends Seshini, Ethini and Femini. It is shown that Rinne and former Prism Queen June Amou are messengers from the Prism World who bring the Prism Sparkle to different worlds. However, Rinne stayed on Earth for too long that she began to disintegrate and lose the Prism Sparkle almost completely.

It is to be noted that the Rainbow Live story is later revealed to be happening in a different world from Aurora Dream and Dear My Future. Penguin-sensei encounters the Yamada equivalent Tanaka in an episode near the end of the season, but Tanaka is not the Yamada of the first two series.

All-Star Selection

All-Star Selection is a mini-show aired after Pretty Rhythm's three anime, featuring a young girl named Laala Manaka who desired to become a Prism Star and learns some lessons from the three previous Pretty Rhythm protagonists: Aira, Mia and Naru to further prepare for Laala's debut. This aired for 11 episodes and recounts events from the three anime such as Aurora Dream, Dear My Future and Rainbow Live.

PriPara

PriPara is the successor to the Pretty Rhythm franchise, which changed the franchise logo due to the discontinuation of Pretty Rhythm arcade game. Like Rainbow Live, it's yet set in a different story background with new characters, however, the relationships of Pripara and other series are briefly mentioned in the film "PriPara the Movie: Everyone, Assemble! Prism ☆ Tours".

King of Prism

King of Prism is a spinoff of Rainbow Live, which is a film series instead of TV animation series. The story introduces Shin, a boy who desires to become a Prism Star and follows steps of "Over The Rainbow". King of Prism’s all-male cast and target at teenager girl market. [7] The 2016 film grossed 250 million yen in its two-month run.[8] The 2017 film Pride the Hero grossed over 600 million yen.[9]
