Petcube is a connected technology startup that designs and develops hardware and software products for pets. It has raised $14 million in seed, venture and Series A financing[1] and more than $500,000 from two Kickstarter campaigns.[2][3] As of May 2017, Petcube had sold over 100,000 cameras.[4] The company’s products are available in over 18 countries and are sold in over 5,000 retail locations.[5] Celebrities including Emma Watson and famous pets like Manny the Frenchie have Petcube cameras.[6][7]

History

The company was founded in 2012, in Kyiv, by Alex Neskin, Yaroslav Azhnyuk and Andrey Klen.

The idea for Petcube came when Alex Neskin’s dog Rocky suffered from separation anxiety and boredom. Rocky destroyed furniture and barked excessively when Neskin was away from home, which made his neighbors worry and call the police. He developed the first prototype Petcube Camera to entertain Rocky and make him less anxious.[8]

Petcube launched its first Kickstarter campaign in 2013[9] and collected $250k, the most of any crowdfunded pet product at the time[8]. A second Kickstarter campaign in 2016 raised over $315k.[3] In March 2017, Petcube announced a treat partnership with Wellness. In June 2017, Petcube acquired Canadian startup PetBot.[10] The company has raised over $14M, including from investors like Y Combinator, Almaz Capital and Aventures.[11][12]

Products

The company’s products are interactive wi-fi connected cameras for pet owners to monitor and interact with their pets when they are away from home. The cameras are controlled via a smartphone app[2][3]. Pet cameras serve multiple purposes. Pet owners use them to fight separation anxiety in their pets and help in training.[13][14]

Petcube Bites

Petcube Bites was released in July 2017, after a Kickstarter campaign in summer 2016.[15][3] It is a Wi-Fi connected device that contains a connected home camera, two-way audio with speakers and a microphone and a treat dispenser. Petcube Bites was the first home camera to integrate with both Amazon Alexa and Amazon Dash Replenishment Service, which allows for automatic treat reordering when supplies run low.[16]

Petcube Play

In November 2016, Petcube started selling Petcube Play, following a Kickstarter campaign in summer 2016[3]. The distinguishing feature of this product is a built-in laser toy. The laser pointer is controlled by the smartphone app so users can play games of “chase the laser” with their pets when they are not at home.[17]

Petcube Camera

Petcube Camera was first introduced in 2013 on Kickstarter[18]. It is a high-tech device measuring four inches on each side. It consists of an aluminum casing, front glass, wide angle camera, laser pointer toy, microphone and speakers. The camera connects to home Wi-Fi. Pet owners can watch, play and talk with their pets through the mobile application with two-way audio, 720p HD video and a laser pointer[19]

Petcube rescue program

Petcube helps shelter and rescue groups save pets and find them new homes. It donates its products, organizes events, and educates these organizations on the uses of pet technology.[20][21]

Awards and achievements

In 2018, Petcube Bites won Product Hunt’s Golden Kitty Award in the WTF Product category[22] and was an Edison Award finalist[23]. Petcube also appeared in a music video by Beck[24]. In 2017, Petcube Play received the Smart Home award from the Wearable Technology Show (London)[25], the TTPM Most Wanted Pet Product Award in the Cat Gear category[26], and an Edison Award[27]. In summer 2017, Petcube was a global promotion partner for the animated movie The Secret Life of Pets[28]. In 2015, Petcube won a Webby Award[29].
