Product Hunt is a website that lets users share and discover new products. The site, which was founded by Ryan Hoover in November 2013, is backed by Y Combinator. Users submit products which are listed in a linear format by day. The site includes a comments system and a voting system similar to Hacker News or Reddit. The products with the most votes rise to the top of each day's list.

Products are organized into four categories; technology products (web apps, mobile apps, hardware products, etc.), games (PC, web, mobile apps), books and podcasts. As of July 2014 submitting products to the site is available to all members. A submission simply requires a product title, URL, and tagline. However, commenting on products is granted to only a select group of members requiring existing member approval.

The site also includes a daily email list that sends out yesterday's top tech "hunts" (products) as well as a featured collection. A version of the digest is also available for games and books.

Product Hunt is also available as an iOS app, macOS app, and Google Chrome extension with an Android app planned.[2]

In November 2016, AngelList acquired Product Hunt for $20 million.[3][4] The acquisition was never confirmed by Product Hunt or AngelList when mentioned in interviews.

History

Product Hunt launched on November 6, 2013 when it began as an email list[5] built using Linkydink.[6] On July 17, 2014, Product Hunt announced its Y Combinator backing.[7][8]

The first version of the website was developed by Nathan Bashaw and Ryan Hoover over the Thanksgiving break in 2013.[9]

In parallel, Ryan Hoover was developing a strong community around new Product Hunt by implementing his own community building strategy.[10][11]

In Fall 2014, the company announced it would receive $6.1 million in Series A funding led by Andreessen Horowitz.[12][13]

On February 5, 2015, Product Hunt won the "best new startup" of 2014 Crunchie award.[14]

In September 2015, Product Hunt added a podcast section to the site. However, in 2016, they decided to put an end to it, stating that it would "distract from our main mission" of surfacing great products.[15]

In September 2017, Product Hunt launched "Ship", which is a suite of tools for makers to generate demand for the products they create.[16]

In February 2018, Product Hunt released a new tech news aggregator app, called "Sip."[17][18] Sip delivers daily tech and news stories in through their mobile app.

Live Chat Section

Product hunt has a live chat section on the website visitors, users can reach out to the support system to get fast answers to their questions. In September 2017, Product Hunt a book titled How to Build a Career in Tech that includes the best career advice from the 550+ LIVE Chats on the site.[19] The book was made available as a free download.

Product Hunt SHIP

In 2017, Product Hunt launched SHIP, a new toolkit for makers to ship products.[20] The product offering lets makers create Upcoming Pages before the product is publicly available, and build a community by communicating with interested users in advance, among other things.

Product Hunt Mafia

Multiple members of the Product Hunt team have gone on to start venture capital funds. In August 2017, Product Hunt's founder and CEO Ryan Hoover announced a $3M Angel Fund called The Weekend Fund. [21] In March 2018, Product Hunt's first employee Erik Torenberg announced Village Global, a $100M venture fund backed by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg,  Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Google’s Eric Schmidt, LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman, and others. [22] In April 2018, Product Hunt's marketing lead Niv Dror announced Shrug Capital, a $3M venture fund that focuses on consumer investments. [23]
