Paul Mango (born 1959) is an American businessman and former U.S. Army officer. He is a member of the Republican Party.

Military career

Mango received a bachelor's degree in 1981 from the United States Military Academy and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Field Artillery. Following training as an Army Ranger, Mango went on to serve in the 82nd Airborne Division for four years.[1][2]

Political career

In May 2017, Mango declared his candidacy for Governor of Pennsylvania in the 2018 election.[3] He was the second Republican to do so. He was endorsed by Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton.[4][5] He is being challenged in the Pennsylvania Gubernatorial Primary by Pennsylvania State Senator Scott Wagner and Pittsburgh-based lawyer Laura Ellsworth. Pennsylvania House Speaker Mike Turzai previously ran in the primary before dropping out. [6]

Mango contracted out BrabenderCox as the media consulting team. David Urban and retired Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army General Dan Allyn are also on his team. [7] Allyn and Mango attended United States Military Academy at the same time.

Mango is critical of the Affordable Care Act, calling it a "disaster."[8] As a candidate for Pennsylvanian governor seeking to defeat Democratic incumbent Tom Wolf, Mango has called for elimination of school property taxes. He does not support increasing the state sales tax or state income tax to replace the lost revenue, and instead would leave "the decision up to local county and municipal officials to determine the appropriate replacement revenue sources."[9] He supports reducing the number of state employees through retirements, attribution, and possibly early pension buyouts.[9] He supports expanding the types of entities allowed to authorize charter schools to open.[10]

Allegheny County voter records indicate that Mango did not vote in any primary election from 1988 through 2015. He did vote in the 2016 and 2017 primaries.[11]

Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)

In March 2018, Mango spoke to the Berks County Patriots, during which he stated that he had always opposed the Affordable Care Act.[12]

In December 2008, Mango authored a McKinsey & Company report about the expected costs of the Affordable Care Act in which he described the shortcomings of the proposed healthcare plans.[13] In 2009, while still employed at McKinsey & Company, Mango discussed the costs of the Affordable Care Act in an interview with The Economist, citing the unrecoverable costs to hospitals.[14]

Personal life

Paul Mango has been married to his wife, Dawn, for 35 years. They have raised five daughters together.[15]
