Patrick Milling-Smith

Patrick Milling-Smith is a film, theater, music video, commercial and experiential producer. He co-founded international production company SMUGGLER with Brian Carmody in 2002.[1] In 2014 Patrick co-founded experience studio Here Be Dragons with Chris Milk.[2]

His productions range across various mediums and are recognized for being talent driven with an emphasis on storytelling, resulting in a wide array of highly sought-after industry awards, including Tonys, the Grammy, Emmys, Cannes Lions, Palm D’ors and Grand Prixs, D&AD pencils, Clios, and Olivier Awards.

SMUGGLER

SMUGGLER launched in 2002 and has since won three Emmy Awards and three Cannes Lions Palm D’ors, along with several Cannes Lions Grand Prixs, including most recently in 2018 for Jay Z’s video Smile, directed by Miles Jay.[3]

SMUGGLER has been awarded Top Production Company accolades by several leading commercial industry magazines and award shows, including the Clio Awards and AdAge, which named SMUGGLER its Production Company of the Year for the third time in 2017.[4] In 2011, Patrick and Brian received the Made in New York Award from Mayor Bloomberg.[5]

In April of 2018, Patrick produced MGM Resorts’ Universal Love Album with McCann New York, which featured classic love songs re-imagined by such musical icons as Bob Dylan, Ke$ha, and St. Vincent. Pronouns of the traditionally heterosexual love songs were swapped to reflect same-sex affection.[6] The Album went on to win 5 Cannes Lions, including one Gold Lion, at the 2018 Cannes Lions Awards.[7]

Film & Theatre

Patrick’s feature film producing credits include Greetings from Tim Buckley,[8] Weightless written by Enda Walsh and starring Alessandro Nivola, and Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian starring Benicio Del Toro.

Upcoming film projects include a remake of cult classic The Wild Geese written by William Monahan and the adaptation of Jean Anouilh’s play Becket, written by William Monahan and to be directed by Michael Mann.[9]

Patrick’s Broadway theatre productions include the play Seminar starring Alan Rickman, which premiered on Broadway and was extended with Jeff Goldblum as the lead,[10] and his most recent productions Once and The Kids Stays In The Picture[11], which he produced alongside Barbara Broccoli, Brian Carmody, and Fred Zollo.

After a successful run at the New York Theatre Workshop, Once moved to Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and officially opened Sunday, March 18, 2012,[12] recouping its initial $5.5 million investment after only 21 weeks and 169 performances.[13] It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2012, and went on to win 8 including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical.[14] On February 10, 2013, Once also took home Best Musical Theater Album at the 55th annual Grammy Awards.[15] The musical toured the US, Toronto, Australia, Korea and London's West End where it was nominated for six Olivier Awards including Best Musical in 2014.

In 2017, Patrick produced The Kid Stays in the Picture, based on the memoir of the same name by Robert Evans.[16] Adapted and directed by Simon McBurney, the play premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in March, 2017 and focuses the rise and fall of Robert Evans (born in New York in 1930 and still going), the former head of Paramount Pictures who produced Love Story, Rosemary's Baby (film), Chinatown (film) and The Godfather.

Here Be Dragons

Here Be Dragons launched in 2015 and has since created virtual reality experiences for the United Nations, Nike, Apple, U2, Muse, NBCUniversal and The New York Times, for which the later it created The Displaced.[17] The virtual reality film tells the stories of three children from Syria, Ukraine and the Sudan whose lives have been upended by conflict and follows them as they move forward trying to rebuild in the aftermath of earth-shattering events. Over one million subscribers to the New York Times received a special edition Google Cardboard on November 8 to experience the film.[18] The Displaced was awarded The Cannes Lions Entertainment Grand Prix, Best in Show at AICP’s Next Awards and was nominated for a Creative Arts Emmy.[19]

Notable projects also include the Mr. Robot Virtual Reality Experience, written and directed by creator and show-runner Sam Esmail, which premiered at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con,[20] “Sessions: The Legion Mixed Reality Experience ” which featured the Microsoft HoloLens headset to bring the FX show Legion to life at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con,[21] and The Protectors: Walk in the Ranger’s Shoe, created by Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow and Imraan Ismail which premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival with a surprise appearance by Hillary Clinton.[22]

The Last Goodbye was also featured as part of the Tribeca Film Festival and allowed viewers to walk alongside Holocaust survivor Pinchas Gutter as he toured the Majdanek Concentration Camp where his parents and sister lost their lives during World War II.[23]

Dispatch[24] debuted its first episode at the 2017 Venice Film Festival and followed with the entire virtual reality series premiering at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.[25] It was most recently nominated for a 2018 Webby Award[26] and won a 2018 Gold Cannes Lion Award.[27]
