Patharkandi is a township located in Karimganj district in the Indian state of Assam. It is 350 kilometres south of the state capital Guwahati and 32 kilometres south of the district headquarters Karimganj.

Approximately 40% of Patharkandi's residents are Bengalis and Bengali Muslims who speak the Sylheti dialect, the rest being Bishnupriya Manipuri, Meiteis and some tribal groups like Khasi and Dimasa Kachari.

Patharkandi is situated by the bank of the Longai River. Patharkandi is also an important police station and the name of an Assam Legislative Assembly constituency.

It is an important market place in the district. It includes prominent schools such as Central Public School, Patherkandi which is the only CBSE school in the township. Other SEBA Board Prominent Private Schools are- Madani Bangla Academy, Keuti Bangla Academy, Patharkandi Collegiate School. Some of the important villages around Patherkandi are:

Etymology

The name "Patharkandi" originated from the Bengali word pathar (meaning "paddy field") and kandi (meaning "riverbank"). Many peoples said the real old name is "Patarkandi" ( পাতারকান্দি ) this name was kept hence the forest and tree was much tree leaf feeding elephants with bundle the word patar (meaning "tree leaf ") and kandi (meaning "bundles ").

History

Patharkandi was formerly known as Pratapgarh. An independent state of Pratapgarh was established by Malik Pratap in the 15th century.

Regular bus services connect Patharkandi with Guwahati, Shillong and Agartala via NH 8 (previously NH 44).
