Passion fruit (fruit)

The passion fruit is the fruit of a number of plants in the Passiflora family.[1][2][3] Edible passion fruits can be divided into three main types: purple ones (fruits of Passiflora edulis Sims), yellow ones (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deg.), and giant granadilla (Passiflora quadrangularis L.),[4] as well as sweet granadilla (Passiflora ligularis).

Appearance and structure

Passion fruits are round or oval. They can be yellow, red, purple,[5] and green.[6] The fruits have a juicy edible center composed of a large number of seeds.[5]

Nutritional value

The fruit is a source of carbohydrates, carotene, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, fiber, and protein.[7] [1]

The part of the fruit that is used (eaten) is the pulpy juicy seeds. Passion fruits can also be squeezed to make juice.[8]

A whole fruit contains 68 calories per 100 grams. The amount of juice in passion fruits is 25–40%.[5]

Cultivation

Passion fruits are cultivated on an industrial scale.[2][9]

Spelling

There has always been a debate about the spelling of Passionfruit. It however is one word not two as it derives from the word of 'Passionflower' which is one word.[10]
