Paranormal Lockdown is a paranormal reality television series. It is executive produced by Nick Groff of Ghost Adventures fame. The series follows Groff and fellow paranormal researcher Katrina Weidman (formerly of Paranormal State) as they confine themselves for 72 straight hours in some of the most haunted locations. The first season aired on Destination America from March 4, 2016 to April 8, 2016.[1] The second season aired from December 16, 2016 to March 3, 2017 on TLC.[2][3] The third season will air beginning in early 2018.[4][5] Critics like paranormal investigator Ben Radford claim that Paranormal Lockdown "is typical sensationalized nonsense trying to gloss over half-baked pseudoscientific investigation".[6]

Premise

The series features Nick Groff, a paranormal investigator who is "on a mission to discover something new in the paranormal field", and paranormal researcher Katrina Weidman who will both spend 72 hours together locked down in the most haunted locations. They will be staying with the dead at these reportedly haunted places, many of which have never been filmed for a production. And some locations will be investigated for the first time on television. Groff and Weidman believe, that "the longer they stay, the more the spirits will communicate with them and the more information they can gather about the unknown".[7]

Reception

Radford states that the claims of living 72 hours in a haunted house as some sort of a challenge is "absurd". People all over the world claim to live in haunted locations, apparently longer than 72 hours. Before you can claim you are living in a haunted house, "ghosts must be proven to exist", a claim that the paranormal community has yet to prove. There are many methodological problems with their investigative techniques, according to Radford. "They fail to properly investigate and verify their assumptions at virtually every step, making leaps of logic and guessing far beyond the evidence". Lockdowns like what you see on this reality show are using ineffective techniques with equipment not meant to be used for this purpose, to look for something that has not been proven to exist or even defined. "A stakeout (such as these) is essentially a scientific experiment without the science". Completely lacking in controls. "Groff and Weidman... are walking around a house with a camera crew, literally and figuratively in the dark. The only things they're testing are their video editors's endurance and the patience of their viewers". These "'reality' television shows are entertainment, not investigation".[6]

In order to capture the shadow figures seen in its 13 buildings on 666 acres, they go through mental exhaustion that causes them to open their minds to the paranormal world and the souls of former patients that remain here. Their investigation takes them to Ward F where a murder occurred, the off-limits Women's Auxiliary Building and the Medical Building's morgue.

In their 72-hour lockdown, Nick and Katrina are the first guests to spend the night at the old Anderson Hotel in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky since 1987, when the then-flophouse permanently closed its doors. They investigate the suicide of a teenage girl who slit her wrists in one of the rooms, a man who hanged himself in a room closet and the reports of a burning man seen at a window who died in a 1974 fire here.

Nick and Katrina are the first paranormal team to investigate Franklin Castle in Cleveland, Ohio, a Victorian mansion built in 1860 that's said to be one of the most haunted houses in America. During their 72-hour investigation, they capture a voice pleading for help believed to be the original owner, Hannes Tiedemann's wife, Luise, who is shroud in black as she mourns her children, play hide and seek with a little ghost girl named Emma and discover what's behind the home's secret doors and passageways.

Nick and Katrina travel to rural Winchester, Indiana for their three-day lockdown inside the abandoned Randolph County Infirmary. During their investigation, they discover where all the fire victim bodies were buried in unmarked graves on the property, as well as documenting residual hauntings and the spirit of Bill, an elderly man who once lived here when it closed.

Nick and Katrina investigate one of the most haunted houses in the area, the Hinsdale House in northwestern New York. During their three-day lockdown, they've seen flies, felt choking sensations and had mind tricks played on them; all signs of a demonic haunting. That's why it's no surprise that in 1974, an exorcism was performed on the entire location and surrounding haunted forest, a Native American burial ground, where a woman was hanged and a man shot and killed his own brother in cold blood.

Note: As Nick and Katrina tour the home with demonologist Tony Spera, he calls paranormal pioneer and his mother-in-law Lorraine Warren, who recalls her experiences when she investigated the house.

Nick and Katrina get locked down in New York's most haunted house, the Kreischer Mansion, built in the late 1880s by Bavarian immigrant Balthasar Kreischer, who also built mansions for his sons, Charles and Edward. In 1894, Edward took his life with a gunshot to the head. His mansion burned down in the 1930s, leaving one mansion behind today. During their investigation, they learn that a gateway to the other side was opened in the basement during a séance, and recently, a man was murdered here by a mafia hitman.

Former residents and construction workers have fled the property after coming face to face with a dark entity, leaving the home uninhabitable. The genesis of the haunting is unclear, but three fires and resulting deaths in the last 100 years have not served to quell paranormal activity within the home. The intense exploration culminates with Nick and owner Eddie Norris journeying into a crawl space beneath the home and unearthing what appeared to be skeletal remains. Local law enforcement was notified immediately.

In its nearly 300 year history, the house has been a battlefield hospital for Revolutionary War And Civil War soldiers, a bordello where two prostitutes were killed, and a speakeasy for mobsters who dumped their victims body in the nearby Delaware River. During the lockdown, they make contact with Samuel, the Field family's young son who died here.

Nick and Katrina travel to Iowa where Malvern Manor, and its elusive entities, await. It's also where investigator Johnny Houser claims an overwhelming rage came over him after encountering a shadow figure. For their 72 hour lockdown, they want to see for themselves what else is confined within the manor's walls. But during their investigation, they are pulled astray from their search by the restless spirits of the house's former inhabitants. While Nick seeks answers from beyond about the mysterious death of a young girl, Katrina squares off against the dominant energy of the house's original owner.

Nick and Katrina investigate Rampart Street Murder House in New Orleans, Louisiana for their three day lockdown to uncover the spirit that's trapped there. During in the 1800s, voodoo rituals which were performed there linger with the ghost of a little boy along with the spirits of a young couple, Addie Hall and Zach Bowen. In 2006, Addie was gruesomely murdered by Zach after Hurricane Katrina devastated the whole state. This is also the first episode, where Nick and Katrina perform a voodoo ritual after their lockdown finished.

Nick and Katrina investigate the cursed Scutt Mansion in Joliet, Illinois for their three day lockdown. Built by barbed wire manufacturer Hiram B. Scutt in 1882, he soon died from a riding accident, followed by his wife, Adelaide who is believed to be the Lady in Black, mourning her loss. The house is believed to be cursed when, in 2006, local historian Seth Magosky purchased the mansion to transform it into a Victorian museum with hundreds of period dolls, only to die in the house before completion. His father Patrick took up his son's work but had to close the museum in 2013 after falling down a spiral staircase he built, breaking his back, and leaving the mansion abandoned ever since.
