Lists Hospitals in California

Paradise Valley Hospital is a 291-bed acute care facility in National City, California. It began operation in 1904 as a sanitarium and is currently under the ownership and operation of Prime Healthcare Services, Inc., a hospital management company located in Ontario, CA. Paradise Valley Hospital is the largest private employer in National City, with an ethnically diverse workforce of approximately 1,200 employees.[1]

History

Paradise Valley Hospital was founded in 1904 by Ellen G. White, who helped to purchase 54 acres (220,000 m2) of land to build a healthcare institution named Paradise Valley Sanitarium. Her efforts were reported in the book The Thirsty Elephant: The Story of Paradise Valley Hospital. This occurred during the health reform of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, who later turned the sanitarium into an acute care hospital. Over the years, Paradise Valley Hospital came to be known for providing charity care to the surrounding community[2] which led to a growing deficit.[3] As a result, it was sold to Prime Healthcare Services in 2006, making it part of a family of more than 51 hospitals owned nationwide by Prime. Prime Healthcare is the largest for-profit operator of hospitals in the state of California based on number of facilities, and has been named “The Fastest Growing Hospital System” in the country by Modern Healthcare.[4]

Community Programs

In addition to its basic 24-hour emergency services and more than 15 clinical services and specialties, Paradise Valley Hospital offers free to low-cost classes and programs to the community through its Center for Health Promotion.[5] These cover areas such as diabetes management with glucose screening, asthma and other respiratory issues, nutrition, quitting smoking, stress and weight management, first time parent classes, and fitness.[6]
