Placzek[1][2] (['plaʈ͡ʂek]) or Płaczek[3][4] (['pu̯aʈ͡ʂek]) is a Polish surname which is most frequent in the south central voivodeships of Opole, Silesia and Lesser Poland[1][3] and is also present in the Polish diaspora.[5][6] It was first recorded in 1440 and is derived from the Polish verbs płakać or płacz, both meaning "to cry" (shed tears).[7] It is cognate with the Czech surname Plaček and must not be confused with the Polish surname Placek[8] (['plat͡sek]).
